Help me remember: Specific NAS unit that was open to OSes

I had seen it as a rec from someone on one of the news threads (probably when Synology started their "Capital Improvement Program" (aka locking down drives), and I was intrigued. But of course I can't find the bookmark, the message I sent to a friend or the original source, nor do I recall the name. But the gist was that it was a solid looking unit in a couple of intel flavors that had 5-6 3.5 bays I think, with some m.2 and decent other specs. It was a company that was really only making those (and maybe were selling cashless ones too?).
Not Ugreen, Terramaster or the like (where replacing OS may void warranty).
I have also seen the Minisforum NAS units and the lower end one looks fine too. But I was hoping to find that original one- it looked nice and I liked the idea of supporting what appeared to be a small company dedicated to providing a functional piece of gear (but not so specialized that if they go under I shouldn't be able to use it going forward).

Offhand I'd think that installing different software on any NAS can't void the warranty just like the warranty void stickers are meaningless. They'd have to show that the software change caused the hardware issue. Not to say that they won't try to deny the warranty but legally they can't do that. I think at least some TerraMaster units have the OS on a internal USB key so you could even pull that out and use a different one for your alternate OS so you could easily swap back to stock if any issues do come up.

Some NAS mfrs seem to trade on the "we didn't waste any effort on developing our own software, install whatever you like" thing. Others are looking to sell a more "integrated solution". From what I can see, Aoostar is one of the brands that doesn't care what you install (not a recommendation as such, just an observation).
