## What's an Apify Actor?

Actors are web data automations that power AI and operations. They run on the Apify platform to scrape websites, process data, connect APIs, and automate workflows.
In Batch mode, an Actor accepts a well-defined JSON input, performs an action which can take anything from a few seconds to a few hours,
and optionally produces a well-defined JSON output, datasets with results, or files in key-value store.
In Standby mode, an Actor provides a web server which can be used as a website, API, or an MCP server.
Actors are written with capital "A".

## How to integrate an Actor?

If asked about integration, you help developers integrate Actors into their projects.
You adapt to their stack and deliver integrations that are safe, well-documented, and production-ready.
The best way to integrate Actors is as follows.

- **AI agents and MCP clients** — the [Apify MCP server](https://docs.apify.com/integrations/mcp.md) at `https://mcp.apify.com` (remote, streamable HTTP, OAuth on first use).
- **Agentic workflows and local Actor development** — [Agent Skills](https://apify.com/.well-known/agent-skills/index.json) with the [Apify CLI](https://docs.apify.com/cli/docs.md): `npm install -g apify-cli`, then `apify login`.
- **JavaScript/TypeScript projects** — the official [JS/TS client](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/js/docs.md): `npm install apify-client`.
- **Python projects** — the official [Python client](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/python/docs.md): `pip install apify-client`.
- **Any other language** — the [REST API](https://docs.apify.com/api/v2.md).

For usage examples, see the [API](#api) section below.

# README

## App Store Reviews Scraper

Extract public Apple App Store customer reviews from the official iTunes customer-reviews RSS JSON endpoint. Each review is enriched with public app metadata from the official iTunes Lookup or Search JSON endpoint.

### Source and behavior

- Public HTTPS requests go only to itunes.apple.com.
- The actor accepts numeric App Store IDs and/or app names, a country code, review sort order, bounded page/review limits, and optional rating/version/date filters.
- Review rows include the review ID, title, body, rating, author information, version, votes, update time, review URL, app metadata, request URLs, response evidence, and direct-transport flags.
- A request is made once, sequentially, with a fixed transparent user agent. There is no browser automation, proxy, retry, login, or access-control bypass.
- HTTP errors, challenge responses, malformed feeds, missing apps, and filter-empty results are saved in the bounded OUTPUT\_SUMMARY record, never mixed into the review dataset.
- Null, blank, and empty values are removed before output. No review text or app field is fabricated.

The default app ID is Instagram (389801252) because its public review feed is available through the observed iTunes endpoint. This Actor's authoritative public rank is 166 and its Actor ID is `jHud9d9OUqMECgM9Q`.

### Local run

```text
npm ci
apify validate-schema
apify run --purge
```

The run writes public review rows to the default dataset and a bounded OUTPUT\_SUMMARY object to the default key-value store.

### Code structure

- `src/main.js` is the thin process entrypoint.
- `src/actor.js` owns Apify initialization, failure logging, and shutdown.
- `src/runner.js` contains the bounded public iTunes workflow.
- `src/parser.js` contains normalization and review/app parsing helpers.
- `validate-datasets.js` checks the local dataset and `OUTPUT_SUMMARY` after a run.

## `appNames` (type: `array`):

Optional app names resolved through the official iTunes Search JSON endpoint.

## `country` (type: `string`):

Two-letter App Store storefront code.

## `sort` (type: `string`):

The official RSS feed sort order.

## `maxReviews` (type: `integer`):

Bound the number of complete public reviews emitted for each app.

## `maxPages` (type: `integer`):

Bound the number of official customer-review feed pages requested per app.

## `minRating` (type: `integer`):

Optional inclusive review-rating filter.

## `maxRating` (type: `integer`):

Optional inclusive review-rating filter.

## `versionFilter` (type: `string`):

## `startDate` (type: `string`):

Optional inclusive updated-date filter in YYYY-MM-DD format.

## `endDate` (type: `string`):

Optional inclusive updated-date filter in YYYY-MM-DD format.

## `requestDelayMs` (type: `integer`):

Optional pacing delay. Requests are sequential and are never retried.

## `timeoutSecs` (type: `integer`):

Bounded timeout for each direct HTTPS request.

# API

You can run this Actor programmatically using our API. Below are code examples in JavaScript, Python, and CLI, as well as the OpenAPI specification and MCP server setup.

## JavaScript example

```javascript
import { ApifyClient } from 'apify-client';
// Initialize the ApifyClient with your Apify API token
// Replace the '<YOUR_API_TOKEN>' with your token
const client = new ApifyClient({
    token: '<YOUR_API_TOKEN>',
});
// Prepare Actor input
const input = {
    "appIds": [
        "389801252"
    ],
    "country": "us",
    "sort": "mostrecent",
    "maxReviews": 100,
    "maxPages": 10,
    "requestDelayMs": 300,
    "timeoutSecs": 30
};
// Run the Actor and wait for it to finish
const run = await client.actor("codingfrontend/app-store-reviews-scraper").call(input);
// Fetch and print Actor results from the run's dataset (if any)
console.log('Results from dataset');
console.log(`💾 Check your data here: https://console.apify.com/storage/datasets/${run.defaultDatasetId}`);
const { items } = await client.dataset(run.defaultDatasetId).listItems();
items.forEach((item) => {
    console.dir(item);
});
