## What's an Apify Actor?

Actors are web data automations that power AI and operations. They run on the Apify platform to scrape websites, process data, connect APIs, and automate workflows.
In Batch mode, an Actor accepts a well-defined JSON input, performs an action which can take anything from a few seconds to a few hours,
and optionally produces a well-defined JSON output, datasets with results, or files in key-value store.
In Standby mode, an Actor provides a web server which can be used as a website, API, or an MCP server.
Actors are written with capital "A".

## How to integrate an Actor?

If asked about integration, you help developers integrate Actors into their projects.
You adapt to their stack and deliver integrations that are safe, well-documented, and production-ready.
The best way to integrate Actors is as follows.

- **AI agents and MCP clients** — the [Apify MCP server](https://docs.apify.com/integrations/mcp.md) at `https://mcp.apify.com` (remote, streamable HTTP, OAuth on first use).
- **Agentic workflows and local Actor development** — [Agent Skills](https://apify.com/.well-known/agent-skills/index.json) with the [Apify CLI](https://docs.apify.com/cli/docs.md): `npm install -g apify-cli`, then `apify login`.
- **JavaScript/TypeScript projects** — the official [JS/TS client](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/js/docs.md): `npm install apify-client`.
- **Python projects** — the official [Python client](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/python/docs.md): `pip install apify-client`.
- **Any other language** — the [REST API](https://docs.apify.com/api/v2.md).

For usage examples, see the [API](#api) section below.

### What does Tripadvisor Reviews Scraper do?

It's a simple and powerful tool that allows you to **get all reviews data from Tripadvisor places**: place info and address, review text and title, date published, travel date, helpful votes, language, reviewer's username, rating given, number of contributions, owner's response and its date, and more. To get that data, just **insert the place URL and click the "Save & Start" button**.

See [more Tripadvisor Scrapers](https://apify.com/maxcopell/tripadvisor-reviews#want-to-scrape-tripadvisor-hotels-or-restaurants) if you need to **scrape Tripadvisor restaurants, hotels, or things to do**.

### How do I use Tripadvisor Reviews Scraper?

Tripadvisor Reviews Scraper was designed to be easy to start with even if you've never extracted data from the web before. Here's how you can scrape Tripadvisor reviews data with this tool:

2. Open [Tripadvisor Reviews Scraper.](https://apify.com/maxcopell/tripadvisor-reviews)
3. Add one or more Tripadvisor place URLs to scrape their info.
4. Click "Start" and wait for the data to be extracted.
5. Download your data in JSON, XML, CSV, Excel, or HTML.

### Input

The input for Tripadvisor Reviews Scraper should be a **Tripadvisor page URL** such as the one above for Hilton Hotel on New York Times Square. You can add one or multiple URLs. You can also **specify the number of reviews and the start date** from which to begin scraping.

Click on the [input tab](https://apify.com/maxcopell/tripadvisor-reviews/input-schema) for an input example in JSON.

```json
{
    "maxReviews": 50,
    "scrapeReviewerInfo": true,
    "startUrls": [
        {
            "url": "https://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g60763-d208453-Reviews-Hilton_New_York_Times_Square-New_York_City_New_York.html"
        }
    ],
    "lastReviewDate": "",
    "disableMachineTranslations": false
}
```

Use `disableMachineTranslations: true` to receive reviews in their original language, without Tripadvisor translating them.

### Output sample

This scraper will deliver results in a dataset. You can choose in which format to download it: JSON, Excel, HTML, CSV, or XML. Here's an excerpt from the JSON dataset you'd get if you apply the input parameters above:

First the USD 35 dollars per day charge, which was added to the room and to be used on food credits felt to be frank like price gouging. One felt helpless and undermined on having no say in the matter and would have a preferred a lower room rate by 35 dollars than being forced to spend the 35 dollars on unnecessary and unwanted food items\n\nThe second big issue which called for a lower rating was even just wanting two plain ordinary glasses, yes an ordinary glass was like pulling teeth. Multiple calls over 36 hours finally I was able to get my message across that NO, I DO NOT WANT YOUR PAPER GLASSES BUT A REAL GLASS\n\nFront office staff at the reception looks overworked and too caught up too patiently attend to a customer with a smile .\n\nThey can learn from the bellboys and conceirge team, who always had a smile and cheerfully went about doing their work. Must have interacted with atleast five of their team members and all of them had the same smiling, can do helpful attitude.\n\nRooms are large and simply fabulous with their magnificent views\n\nThe lobby is spacious , which is a rarity \n\nHence if you are just looking at a nice comfortable stay , then a stay at this property is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED \n\n#newyorkhotels #goodservice #newyorkstay\n#goodhotels",

First off, the location is perfect, right off of Times Square as well as the subway connection there is perfect to be able to to anywhere in the city. So this hits all the points for location. Next, the Hotel rooms, spacious, well appointed and on floors 22 -44, so great views, particularly on the upper floors. I was on floor 36 with a great view south, Empire state building right outside my window. Staff, all great, respectful and were always glad to assist; great team. I was recognized as a Diamond member; check. The only downside was the price of a full breakfast; 50 USD (plus tax). that I find a bit pricey, but the only minus point. I fully recommend staying here.",

### How many results can you scrape with Tripadvisor Reviews Scraper?

Tripadvisor scraper can return tens of thousands of results on average, for example, 55,000. However, you have to keep in mind that scraping tripadvisor.com has many variables to it and may cause the results to fluctuate case by case. There’s no one-size-fits-all-use-cases number. The maximum number of results may vary depending on the complexity of the input, location, and other factors. Some of the most frequent cases are:

- website gives a different number of results depending on the type/value of the input
- website has an internal limit that no scraper can cross
- scraper has a limit that we are working on improving

Therefore, while we regularly run Actor tests to keep the benchmarks in check, the results may also fluctuate without us knowing. The best way to know for sure for your particular use case is to do a test run yourself.

### Want to scrape Tripadvisor hotels or restaurants?

You can use the [Tripadvisor Scraper](https://apify.com/maxcopell/tripadvisor) to scrape Tripadvisor data such as restaurants, attractions, things to do, and even tours.

### Not your cup of tea? Build your own scraper

Tripadvisor reviews scraper doesn’t exactly do what you need? You can always build your own! We have various [scraper templates](https://apify.com/templates) in Python, JavaScript, and TypeScript to get you started. Alternatively, you can write it from scratch using the [open-source library Crawlee](https://crawlee.dev/). You can keep the scraper to yourself or make it public by adding it to Apify Store (and [find users](https://blog.apify.com/make-regular-passive-income-developing-web-automation-actors-b0392278d085/) for it).

Or let us know if you need a [custom scraping solution](https://apify.com/custom-solutions).

### Integrations and Tripadvisor Reviews Scraper

Last but not least, **Tripadvisor Reviews Scraper can be connected with almost any cloud service or web app** thanks to [integrations on the Apify platform](https://apify.com/integrations). You can integrate with **Make, Zapier, Slack, Airbyte, GitHub, Google Sheets, Google Drive**, [and more](https://docs.apify.com/integrations).
Or you can use [webhooks](https://docs.apify.com/integrations/webhooks) to carry out an action whenever an event occurs, e.g., get a notification whenever Tripadvisor Reviews Scraper successfully finishes a run.

### Using Tripadvisor Reviews Scraper with the Apify API

The Apify API gives you programmatic access to the Apify platform. The API is organized around RESTful HTTP endpoints that enable you to manage, schedule, and run Apify Actors. The API also lets you access any datasets, monitor Actor performance, fetch results, create and update versions, and more.

To access the API using Node.js, use the `apify-client` npm package. To access the API using Python, use the `apify-client` PyPI package.

Check out the [Apify API reference](https://docs.apify.com/api/v2) docs for full details or click on the [API tab](https://apify.com/maxcopell/tripadvisor-reviews/api) for code examples.

### Is it legal to scrape Tripadvisor Reviews data?

Apify's [Tripadvisor scrapers](https://apify.com/store?search=tripadvisor) are ethical and **do not extract any private user data**. They only extract what the user has chosen to share publicly, on the website. However, you should be aware that your results could contain personal data. You should not scrape personal data unless you have a legitimate reason to do so.

If you're unsure whether your reason is legitimate, consult your lawyers. You can also read the Apify blog post on the [legality of web scraping](https://blog.apify.com/is-web-scraping-legal/) and [ethical scraping](https://blog.apify.com/what-is-ethical-web-scraping-and-how-do-you-do-it/).

# Actor input Schema

## `startUrls` (type: `array`):

Paste here a URL(s) of a specific place you want to get reviews from.

## `sourceDatasetId` (type: `string`):

Dataset ID of a finished Tripadvisor Scraper run to get start URLs from.

## `maxItemsPerQuery` (type: `integer`):

Use a large value (for example 1 million) to get all reviews from each place. If you want to set a limit across all reviews use 'Options' -> 'Maximum charged results'.

## `scrapeReviewerInfo` (type: `boolean`):

Scrape reviewer info (name, profile picture, location etc.). You should only extract reviewer's info if you have a legit reason to do so.

## `lastReviewDate` (type: `string`):

It is a date where the scraper stops loading older reviews. Select the date in format YYYY-MM-DD or {number} {unit} *(e.g. '3 days' or '1 week')*

## `disableMachineTranslations` (type: `boolean`):

When enabled, Tripadvisor does not translate the reviews and returns them in the original language

## `reviewRatings` (type: `array`):

Select and filter only the desired review ratings. For all ratings, select the 'All ratings' option. Useful if you want to scrape only reviews with certain ratings.

## `reviewsLanguages` (type: `array`):

Select the desired reviews language. Note: English reviews are prioritized, so your reviews come in English first and then in other languages.<br><br>⚠️ Tripadvisor changed its review logic - it now works with only one selected language. Selecting multiple languages can give inconsistent or unexpected results.
