5 tips and tricks for YouTube Shorts

YouTube’s short-form video platform connects creators with audiences around the globe. Take your videos to the next level with the app’s handy features.

Quickly align your elements using the guidelines in the Shorts editor.

Create transitions quickly

Want to pull off a seamless, almost magical transition between two shots? Use the Align feature. It creates a ghost overlay so you can position the subject of one video in the same spot as another. It’s an easy way to create your own blink-and-you’ll-miss-it Short.

To flip on a Green Screen, head to the toolbar menu on the right, tap the Green Sceen icon, and set the scene for your background. (Capybaras, anyone?)

Easily add captions

The Timeline feature makes adding text to sections of your video super-simple. Add helpful how-to steps, pithy captions, silly descriptions and more. You’ll see the Timeline option after you’ve selected your video clips and added your filters.

Now that your scene is set and your Green Screen is on, you’re ready to record and share your content with the world.

Experiment with effects

The app is loaded with cool, custom video effects for your Shorts. Clone yourself, add a vintage vibe or use Green Screen to make it look like you’re standing on top of Kilimanjaro or under the Northern Lights.

Pick a soundtrack

YouTube’s vast music library has thousands of hit songs from record-label partners as well as originals by creators the world over – and you can use them in your Shorts for free. After you’ve uploaded a clip, tap the Add Sound button or tap the bookmark button to add a song to your Saved tab.

Get in the mix

Remixing other creators’ Shorts with some of yours is a great way to put your own spin on the latest trends. When you come across a Short that inspires you, tap the Remix button to use its audio, splice it into a clip of your own or overlay a video of yourself.
