I’m not sure I follow the all-in-one schema issue? Won’t each endpoint have its own schema for its response? And if you’re updating things asynchronously then doesn’t versioning each endpoint effectively solve all the problems? That way you have all the resilience of the xml validation along with the flexibility of supplying older objects until each participant is updated.

Merge what though? A question that’s already been asked and what are likely low-quality answers already present on the existing question?

It’s supposed to act as a gentle reprimand and point them to the correct behaviour. Pretty much the same way it works anywhere else if you walk in and disrespect a space.

The strict moderation is the main strength of it. Makes it so much easier to find useful answers and for those answers to be refined.

Most of the toxicity I’ve seen surrounding the site has been from people upset that they were asked to improve their search skills, asked to improve their question to be more useful for those answering them, or simply demanding that people answer to their deadlines.

It’s hard to take complaints about the site seriously when so many of them seen to come from entitled arseholes being offended at being asked to not be arseholes.

As mentioned in the article these can be quieter than a retail unit. The large fans move a lot of air and the large filter area means it’s easier to pull that air through; both combined mean a lower fan speed is needed for a given throughput.

HEPA filters may not be necessary - it seems that homemade air purifiers with standard filters can outperform them in clean air delivery rate, arguably the most important factor for a purifier. The air may not be as clean with each pass through it, but it’ll move much more air.

Have you considered moving somewhere that’s better aligned with your values? It’s not something to undertake lightly, but I know that moving helped me a lot. Totally different situation for me though.

For me it was basically just moving somewhere bigger, even if I didn’t get much better at making connections just knowing it was possible made a difference.

There’s no doubt the developers deserve support for their work, but there’s no requirement imposed by Free Software for this.

All criminals get away with their crimes for a time. How many companies want to be sitting on a time bomb like that though?

The ability to modify the code is a central tenet of free software. The GPL takes care of making those modifications available to others. That effectively is the payment the original devs get.

Sometimes it pays to not go looking for problems.

The staff at such places can decide whether they want to ask a group to move on. Respect their choice to do so and stop trying to police your friends’ behaviours over your own fears.

Installing it on a virtual machine can be a good way to try it out to begin with. No need to restart whenever you’d like to use it, and you’ve still got access to everything you normally use.

I remember using VirtualBox years ago to do this.

You’ll come across good and bad wherever you travel. When we travelled in Japan a few years ago we found pretty much everyone we dealt with was friendly and helpful. We didn’t speak any Japanese.

I wouldn’t bother renting a car unless you’ve got a specific plan for it - their public transit is excellent and will still take you out into the countryside if you want.
