麥可‧翁達傑（Michael Ondaatje）一九四三出生於斯里蘭卡，出身自經營茶園的富裕地主階級，兼具荷蘭殖民者後裔、僧伽羅族、塔米爾族等血統。一九六二年赴加拿大求學、定居。一九六七年發表的第一本詩集《精巧的怪獸》（Dainty Monsters）與一九七○年出版的《比利小子選集》（The Collected Works of Billy the Kid）均獲加拿大總督獎，一九九二年以首部小說《英倫情人》（The English Patient）成為第一位獲頒英國「布克獎」的加拿大作家。翁達傑的作品類型涵蓋詩、小說與評論，寫作風格融合了爵士樂的節奏、電影的蒙太奇手法，語言深刻而優美，是目前英語世界極受推崇的作家。台灣已出版的翁達傑作品有《英倫情人》、《一輪月亮與六顆星星》（In the Skin of a Lion）。
