1961年生まれ。作家、歴史家、アクティヴィスト。カリフォルニアに育ち、環境問題・人権・反戦などの政治運動に参加。1988年より文筆活動を開始する。歩くことがいかに人間の思考と文化に深く根ざしているか広大な人類史を渉猟する『ウォークス 歩くことの精神史』（Wanderlust, 2000）、エドワード・マイブリッジ伝River of Shadows（2004、全米批評家協会賞）、ハリケーン・カトリーナを取材したA Paradise Built in Hell（2009、邦訳『災害ユートピア』）、#MeToo運動のうねりの予兆となった話題作『説教したがる男たち』など、環境、土地、芸術、アメリカ史など多分野に二十を越す著作がある。美術展カタログや雑誌への寄稿も多数。
