Justin Patrick Moore Forget about dystopian literature. Listen instead to dustopian music. New from Everyday Dust and still ringing from the long tail of November is Overtones, an album of musique concrète, sourced entirely from the sounds produced by one 200-year-old handbell. Easily a favorite record of 2024. An immersive thirty minute exploration of microcosmic sounds.

Mr. Conner This is deep listening. This single extended track plays like a soundtrack to awakening to a demented story of otherworldly forces that is disconfigured and reassembled. It features haunting of bells, disturb of buzzing, and the discomfort from the sounds of insects crawling over your cortex and terrorizing the synapses.

about

"Overtones is a long form musique concrète piece exploring the boundaries of sound manipulation using only the resonances, tones, and textures of a single sound source - a 200 year old handbell. The bell was meticulously recorded - rung, struck, and bowed - each method unveiling a unique spectrum of sounds. These raw recordings were then transformed through granular synthesis, pitch shifting, effects and tape manipulation.

The result is an abstract, complex, sonic landscape where the line between the organic and the artificial dissolves. By isolating and manipulating the smallest fragments of sound within the recordings, hauntingly beautiful otherworldly tones have manifested that defy the listener’s expectations of a single sound source.

The piece moves slowly but fluidly between passages of meditative resonance and moments of intense, fractured texture. Listeners will find that Overtones evolves over time. This challenging yet hypnotic composition presents a sonic journey that unfolds layers of depth and intricacy with each listen. What may initially seem like stark minimalism slowly reveals itself as an intricate and multi-layered composition, offering new insights and sensations with each listen."
