143·6 days agoI had one of these about 10 years ago. Pretty nice little things. However, since moving to Linux exclusively 8 years ago, I don’t miss them at all. Plus, with all the publicly facing bullshit from Microsoft, it blows my kind that people will still spend money on this. Not an Apple fan either, but you can get a very powerful Mac for the sake money.

5·10 days agoJust like with proprietary software, there’s amazingly dependable FOSS software, and there’s garbage. In my experience FOSS is much more reliable when compared to it’s proprietary counterparts, with very few exceptions. Seems to me that you’ve been dealing with the wrong FOSS projects.

9·10 days agoYeah, no, I totally get it. It just blows that people just bends over like this for all the corpo bullshit, users, devs and other companies alike. I have a small business with my wife, and I try to run as much as humanly possible on open source software. I donate to the platforms we use, and for almost 3 years we’ve gotten away with not giving any money to Microsoft, Google, Amazon, Apple or any of the other tech giants. It is a Titanic task to keep everything running, for sure, but absolutely worth it. My point is that, if we can do it being so small and barely profitable, I can’t imagine larger companies having an issue with moving away from these predatory practices. Then again, I’m not fully aware of what other businesses might require that we can live without comfortably.

391·11 days agoHow many more of these do people really need to just get the fuck out from under Microsoft’s umbrella?
You’re finally getting it. Good.
Calling others on their bullshit does not equal hating on them. Why do you think CalyxOS had to ‘take a break’? Why do you think that The only thing these ‘privacy’ focused OSs can do about GrapheneOS is say it’s geared towards criminals? They have no other way to try and smear them because they’re all garbage in comparison.
Get your shit straight. GrapheneOS is so fucking awesome that they plugged an actual Linux kernel hole within hours of it being found, whereas it took Google weeks, never mind these Murena and Calyx morons.
That’s how it sounds. So, I’m a pedophile because I run GrapheneOS on my phone? I guess I better tell my wife, and my kids.

Technology@lemmy.world•Windows 11’s push for mandatory Microsoft accounts is hitting a nerve with users who say the change complicates setup, privacy, and basic PC ownershipEnglish
1·17 days agoYeah, led like sheep by the illusion of convenience. It is sad.
I’ve been reading all over the place how people are finally becoming more aware of the lack of privacy, but I scratched that as me always seeing this because I mostly interact in privacy and security related environments.
However, the least likely person I know to be concerned about these factors is my brother, as he’s all about convenience and ‘glamour’. Well, he called me on Sunday to ask me if I suggested that he flashed “that operating system you use on your phone” (GrapheneOS) on his device, and asked if I knew what proton was 🤣 only to mention that he had found that and was in the process of dropping gmail. Imagine my surprise when this guy is calling for this.
What I’m trying to say is that, if my brother is suddenly concerned about his digital privacy and security, I am certain 50% of Normie’s out there are as well, or will be pretty soon.
I genuinely believe that we’re living in a pivotal moment in digital philosophy across all realms, people are finally waking up from the convenience slumber, and my hope is that this will help shift the discourse all over the place, and we can all expect more of the people in our environments start asking questions about how to fly under the radar.

Technology@lemmy.world•iPhone New iOS Age Verification Sparks Outrage as Users Say 'I Will Switch to Android'English
2·20 days agoThat’s one of the problems. Why are you mixing people in with companies? The largest OS distributors already have this in place, those ‘companies’ already have this in place. Who do you think has been lobbying for this to be pushed? All of those giants benefit from this by pushing undue strain on small developers, which in turn tightens their grip on the users. Yeah, all the fucking politicians are to blame, as are all those companies as well. I’d this will cause projects to just remove access from those jurisdictions, good. Maybe people in those areas will help vote out the same politicians that bent over for a few bucks for this (unlikely though). Open your eyes, it’s not politicians against tech, it’s the powerful against us. I’m glad GrapheneOS decided to just not comply. And there are way more open projects taking the same stand. There’s still brave people out here.
So, I stand by what I said. I made my choice, you also get to make yours.

Thanks for the tip. I guess I’ll dive into eBay and see what I can find. I want 2 Linux tablets, 1 for myself (reading comics and books since I jumped the Kindle ship long ago, watching my Jellyfin library on the couch, etc),and one to put on the wall as a central command center for my Home assistant.
I really appreciate it, because I did let my hate for Microsoft keep me from ever looking in that direction. Thanks so much bud.
