FutureWarning: Calling float on a single element Series is deprecated in my stock analysis cod #146612

A good approach would be to avoid directly converting the whole Series to a float. If the Series is expected to contain only one value, extracting that value first and then converting it should avoid the warning. For example, using ".iloc[0]" before "float()" could be appropriate when a single value is guaranteed. |

Hi @Devi-prog, The reason your Also, calling Here is the cleanest, most "Pandas-native" way to fix this. You can use # Calculate once to save processing time
low_min = data['Low'].min()
high_max = data['High'].max()
# Safely extract the float value
support = float(low_min.iloc[0]) if isinstance(low_min, pd.Series) else float(low_min)
resistance = float(high_max.iloc[0]) if isinstance(high_max, pd.Series) else float(high_max)Alternatively, if you are absolutely sure it's always returning a single-element Series in your specific dataset structure, you can just do: support = float(data['Low'].min().iloc[0])
resistance = float(data['High'].max().iloc[0])Hope this clears up the warning for you! |

Your low_min = data['Low'].min()
high_max = data['High'].max()
support = float(low_min.item() if isinstance(low_min, pd.Series) else low_min)
resistance = float(high_max.item() if isinstance(high_max, pd.Series) else high_max)The useful thing about It's also worth checking This passed small synthetic tests with ordinary columns and single-ticker MultiIndex columns on pandas 2.2.3 / Python 3.10.12, with no warnings. Hi @Devi-prog 👋 This warning occurs in Pandas 2.0+ because

Since "min()" and "max()" on a normal Series should already return a scalar, the "isinstance(..., pd.Series)" check isn't really needed here. I'd first check the type and shape of "data['Low']" and "data['High']". If you're actually selecting a single value from a Series, use ".iloc[0]", for example: value = float(series.iloc[0]) Also, avoid calling "data['Low'].min()" multiple times. Store the result in a variable and inspect its type if the warning continues. |

Your conditional is still calling "float()" on the Series in the branch where "isinstance(..., pd.Series)" is true. That's why the warning can persist — you haven't actually applied ".iloc[0]" there. Try extracting the minimum first, then handling the Series case: low_min = data["Low"].min() support = float(low_min.iloc[0] if isinstance(low_min, pd.Series) else low_min) One thing worth checking: if "data["Low"]" or "data["High"]" returns a DataFrame instead of a Series, you may have duplicate column names. Pandas documents that selecting a duplicated column label can return a DataFrame rather than a Series. You can check that with: print(data.columns[data.columns.duplicated()].tolist()) If you do have duplicate columns, it's better to fix those or explicitly select the intended column rather than blindly taking the first result. Question
Body
I'm encountering a FutureWarning in my stock analysis code when trying to convert a Pandas Series to a float. Specifically, I am working with stock data where I calculate the support and resistance levels. The warning suggests that calling float() on a Series with a single element will raise a TypeError in future versions of Pandas.
Here's the part of my code where the warning appears:
python
Copy code
support = float(data['Low'].min()) # Original line
resistance = float(data['High'].max()) # Original line
The warning message is:
python
Copy code
FutureWarning: Calling float on a single element Series is deprecated and will raise a TypeError in the future. Use float(ser.iloc[0]) instead
What I have tried:
I've read that I should access the single element of the Series using .iloc[0] to avoid the deprecation warning. So, I tried modifying the code as follows:
python
Copy code
support = float(data['Low'].min()) if isinstance(data['Low'].min(), pd.Series) else data['Low'].min()
resistance = float(data['High'].max()) if isinstance(data['High'].max(), pd.Series) else data['High'].max()
However, I'm still seeing the warning.
Environment:
Python version: 3.12.3
Pandas version:2.2.3
Any advice or insight would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!
