I am so in love with these characters! Sakura and Umemiya my fave boys. I love the fact that the VA's for Umemiya and Sakura are the same for Gojo and Megumi, their dynamic is superior.
I wasn't sure how I was going to feel about this one, because teenage male protagonists aren't really my thing currently. But I adored Sakura. The set up is better than your typical Shonen school for battling where the students are pit against each other from day one. I won't spoil it, but it's a refreshing change and I already like the MC. I sped through this first volume and can't wait for more.
My gratitude to Kodansha Comics and Netgalley for providing me with an advanced reading copy of this series in exchange for an honest review.
From the start, the whole concept seemed repetitive that I'd rather revisit my copy of Tokyo Revengers. But as the story unraveled, I found some interesting characterization that made me want to hold on to what I'm currently reading. This is actually a fun quick-read. Haruka Sakura was ostracized by society for existing as a delinquent and having a strange appearance. He was used to being treated as someone who creates trouble even when he's only trying to help. But when he when went to Makochi town for a new life and new school, he found out that there is more to life than black or white.
Wind Breaker volume one is an interesting opening to a series. It is full of action sequence that is not hard to follow. The art is beautiful and the main character is someone you'll not get tired of seeing. Fans of Hanagaki Takemichi from Tokyo Revengers would surely want to get to know this new character! This is an completely exciting new take on a delinquent world.

Wind Breaker Volume 1 is hopefully the beginning of a very long series. It centres the life of the young Haruka Sakura, a boy with heterochromia in both hair and eyes who has always been ostracised because of his appearance and his demeanour. The alienation he felt led him to enrol in Furin High School, institution renowned for his delinquent-like students, to prove his strength by defeating the current leader of the school. Unbeknownst to him, two years prior to his arrival, the students of Furin pledged to defend their town from outside attacks and invasions, a factor which seemingly obstacles his plan. He did not expect though to start experiencing a sense of community thanks to the recent change in the school and the way townsfolk react to his presence.
I really enjoyed reading this manga and honestly I did not imagine liking it this much. I am hoping I get the chance to review the second volume as well. The artstyle is brilliant and the concept is original.
[Thanks to Netgalley and Kodansha for a copy of this manga in exchange for an unbiased review.]
Furin High School takes the lowest of the low and lets them brawl and clobber to their hearts’ content. Sakura has no time for the weak and has come to the school to put himself on top of the heap. Except Furin’s had a bit of a shift in its mission statement and Sakura might end up more of a hero than he ever wanted…
I’m a sucker for a very dumb manga premise and this one just hits the ground running, with the establishment of Furin High as this Lord of the Flies pit where the delinquents go to just randomly destroy. At least as far as Sakura knows.
The way this quickly gets upended and it turns out the students are the defenders of their little patch and the neighbourhood absolutely adores them is really clever, doubly so with Sakura wanting absolutely no part of it and getting swept up in it all by accident.
With Sakura both positively tsundere about it all and new to everything it makes him a great introduction for the audience to get into the meat of the premise, which admittedly doesn’t go any further than ‘a bunch of gangs try and beat each other up’. Which, hey, if you want a shonen action book, you could do worse.
I mean, make no mistake, this is a broad-ass story about a town that’s apparently trapped in the DMZ as far as hoodlums go. There’s an amusing paranoia that sort of pervades the whole thing as clearly fisticuffs could erupt at any second if somebody says the wrong thing at the wrong time.
Combined with Sakura constantly being forced to do the right thing, half the time by accident, and learn to be part of this misfit family, it’s pretty close to being enough and certainly makes a better case for itself than a lot of fighting stories do.
The action is reasonably well done, the story is absolutely preposterous, there are a few laughs (some unintentional - a lot of these kids are flat-out wearing costumes and some of the exposition feels like seeding boss fights down the road), and Sakura’s a hopelessly direct character caught up in a more nuanced world than intended and he makes for a really good lead.
So it’s enjoyable enough and worthwhile on those grounds. If you’re not into shonen manga this is not the book to change your mind, but if you have room in your heart for another fighting book with oddball characters, you could do worse than letting this one in.
3.5 stars - yeah, I would say this is above average and even if it’s utterly ridiculous it has its heart in the right place (even as its fists are flying). A unique enough idea that I’ll likely give it a second volume because Sakura’s got a lot of potential.
"The human body is a lot warmer than I thought..."
That one line sums up Sakura's personality/character pretty accurately. Sakura, to me, is extremely likeable. Yes, I like how bashful/embarrassed he gets whenever he receives a compliment from someone. I like it even more since it's implied that he's not used to that kind of attention. Instead, he's used to receiving dirty looks and judgmental stares simply because of the way he looks.
watched the anime a few months ago and finally wanted to start reading the manga. the art style is GORGEOUS and i forgot about all my pookie bears! SAKURA MY BABY LOVE YOU KING. excited to read on!
I liked this one, it honestly was a lot of fun! 😂 It is so endearing that Sakura-kun is trying to be this whole alpha, this cold guy you doesn't a peep about anything and anyone, who just cares about fighting and couldn't care less about what people think of him... but one little 'thank you' or one little friendly gesture and that boy is blushing like crazy, becoming flustered and embarassed, because he simply isn't used to any affection. Which, in turn, makes me soo sad again. 🥹 This is only the first Volume, but I hope Sakura will make lots of friends in the series!!🫶
But also; the action scenes are pretty awesome and I love how cool he is when fighting!!🤩🤩🤩
Started reading this, expecting to not like it at all...but yeah it was so good 😭 I love the premise so much and the characters are so fun (except the covers, the ones in later volumes are erm ugly sorry)
It's not quite as insane as Blue Lock, but it's getting there. Wind Breaker follows Haruka Sakura as he leaves his old town and arrives in a new one specifically to attend Thug High, AKA Furin High School. But while he wasn't looking, Furin changed its policies, and while the toughest fighters still attend, now they use their skills to protect the town rather than just brawl. To say Sakura is confused and disappointed may be an understatement, mostly because he has several chips on his shoulders thanks to his unusual coloring and has learned that "strength" equates to "hitting first." The art is excessively busy, but the premise is solid, largely because Sakura's past and how he came to be who he is is subtly done. Based on this volume, there's room for the series to grow into itself.
It's fun, I love the characters, but there are definitely inconsistencies and things that just don't make sense. Just take it at face's value and don't think too much about it XD
It’s only been about a month since I started watching the Wind Breaker anime, and I already caved and started reading the manga 😩 I really tried to fight the urge to read the manga…but I love my babies too much 😭 I want more content of them, and I was willing to read the story from the very beginning to get ALL the content.
First of all, I’m usually bored when I’m reading a story I’ve already consumed in anime format…but I was completely locked in reading this. The anime was pretty faithful to this initial installment in the series, but I still found myself pulled right in by the characters.
I find Sakura to be a compelling protagonist because, at face value, he’s a pretty straightforward character. He’s a loner, and all he knows is how to fight. His one priority is proving that he’s the best at fighting. However, there’s far more to him than initially meets the eye. Sakura is not just alone, but he’s lonely. He’s grown up being bullied and rejected for his outward appearance, but in his heart he’s actually been craving acceptance and love. Therefore, when faced with acts of kindness, he’s easily overwhelmed because he’s unfamiliar with how to respond to them. His instinct is to reject the generosity of the new people around him, but it’s mostly because he’s not used to being cared for and supported.
In addition, Sakura highly values strength and fighting, but he has a very rigid view of what that means. Most of the fights he ends up becoming involved in is because whoever he’s fighting has proven, in his opinion, to be lesser and in need of being cut down to size. He finds most typical “delinquents” insufferable because they often prey on the weak, and they depend on big numbers to intimidate and overpower others. Thus, he quickly finds a level of respect for some of the Furin boys because the way they fight aligns far more with his own moral compass and view of the world.
All that to say… Sakura is far more than the simpleminded boy he may appear to be on the surface. I adore him. He’s my lil meow meow. I have the adoption papers ready to be signed. That’s my son, and I love and cherish him. He needs to be protected at all costs 💖😭💖
As for the other characters, I found myself feeling even more fond towards Nirei reading the manga. He’s such a sweet little nerd. He has such good intentions, so much passion in his heart, and such a big brain. I adore that lil nerd 💖 His growth journey will be so rewarding to follow as he’s, even evident in this first volume, probably the weakest student at Furin. I’m rooting for you, Nirei!
Finally, I think it’s important to mention Kotoha. She’s really the first person Sakura meets in this neighborhood, and she’s one of the characters that directly makes Sakura question the way he views the world. She sees the potential in him immediately, but she also quickly spots his shortcomings. She never really pushes Sakura to believe exactly what she does, but she does point to flaws in Sakura’s logic and provides a different lens for him to see the world through. For me, this makes her compelling, but I must also admit that because of it I feel like she reads as being much older than Sakura. She’s not. They’re basically the same age (if I’m remembering correctly from having looked it up while watching the anime). I think she needed to be a bit less wise for her to truly feel like she’s Sakura’s contemporary and not senior.
Anyways. I could keep going on and on about the characters…but I’d rather hold off until we get to volumes that feature some of them more prominently 😂
P.S. Of course Sugishita is a Scorpio. I can always clock a fellow Scorpio in a story 💀
def 3.5 i. love. sakura. it's been a while for me to read a manga that's just so light and so easy to read. tbh i watch the anime first and then go with the manga and i love both of them equally. it's about sakura who's just moved into this citu named makochi where it was where all the gangsters and crime activities came from. he wants to be the strongest of them all, and he is just so cute. i love his character
Thank you to NetGalley and Kodansha for a free review copy of this!
This was a great first volume! We got introduced to a bunch of characters and got some info on all the different kings. We got a little run in with a team right at the end so I'm curious where that's going to go. Overall, a good start and I will definitely be checking out the next one in the series!
Hiragi babysitting Sakura and Sugishita will never not be funny heh. I watched the anime twice and got obsessed; now it’s time to binge-read the manga so I can get more obsessed 😋✨ I love these boys so much they give me so much comfort 🥹💞
