I found Mark's latest book to be more motivating than informative - which isn't necessarily a bad thing given that becoming 'known' is more about raw hard work than theory.

This was required reading for a personal branding class. It gives a pretty decent overview of the types of things that make people famous bloggers, YouTube sensations, or recognized experts in their fields. It had some "how to" but leaned more toward "inspirational," focusing on reporting loosely-organized stories from 100 interviews with "known" people. Here's a brief outline:

1 - Can Anybody Become Known?
The changing world makes being "known" a transferable asset like education or experience. It requires finding a "sustainable interest" (different from a passion / favorite hobby) - something you can provide value in for years to come.

2 - Step One: Your Place
Finding your sustainable interest should not be random, but should not be totally self-focused either. The goal is to reframe your skills to something broad/narrow/specific/unique enough to become known for something positive.

3 - Finding Your Sustainable Interest
Gives seven exercises for picking your topic, two of which were particularly useful: 1) What is the thing "only I" can do, the "rich thing" people come to me to ask? 2) Do a "core values mashup" (combine two or more of your disparate talents / values / interests to make something unique).

4 - Step Two: Determining Your Space
A "space" is a specific niche with a market size big enough to be worth pursuing. It might be something that gets fewer than 500k hits when you Google it (numbers likely dated, since searching the same things mentioned by the author yielded many more results than the book said they did).

5 - Eight Space Strategies
Gives eight ways to stand out, such as having a very unique tone (like James Altucher's irreverent self-help articles), or combining disparate fields or interests, or using an unusual platform for your niche (like Instagram for Real Estate), dominating a specific content type, using influencers (by slowly courting their favor by doing things for them until they help you in return), or being a curator / hub of all the important news about a topic.

6 - Step Three: Finding Your Fuel
Focuses on the importance of good content and various types, like written content (good for Search Engine Optimization), audio (more loyal / educated / wealthy audience), video (younger / more engaged audience), and visual (good for Facebook / Instagram / Pinterest). It's better to focus on one key type than to dabble everywhere.

7 - Step Four: Creating an Actionable Audience
Raw audience size sometimes doesn't make a difference (Alyssa Milano failed to sell a single book with a post to 3 million followers because connections were weak and unrelated to the book subject). Gives four phases of bringing your audience along: 1) awareness (being discovered), 2) engagement (getting them to click links / comment / share), 3) stable connection (subscriptions, follows, etc.) and loyalty (evangelists for your brand).

8 - Taking Your Brand to the Next Level
Proposes writing a book and pursuing speaking opportunities as good ways to establish yourself as an expert (and force yourself to become an expert).

9 - Five Inspiring Stories
Gives stories of people who became known in different ways, from creating unique YouTube channels to purchasing a publishing company in order to get an unusual book published.

10 - Grit, Pivoting, and Quitting
Gives advice on when to give up or change tactics, with some especially powerful advice about not allowing the pursuit of becoming known to make you "shallow, elitist, and self absorbed." Advices keeping the focus on helping others, spending 5 hours a week (3 making content, 1 promoting, 1 engaging), and measuring progress (don't give up as long as you're making incremental progress in awareness, inquiries, revenue, or personal goals).

11 - The Care and Nurturing of KNOWN
Makes another case for consistency (one rich content per week is a good rule of thumb) and gives an inspirational essay and a bunch of inspirational quotes. My favorites:

If a project fails, don't let it be from not having tried hard enough and kept going long enough. - Dr. Jamie Goode, wine blogger

I started very small. Everything good and great starts as something small… Maybe you feel like one raindrop in an ocean of need. But even the ocean is not complete without that single raindrop. Just care. Just love. Just take one step. The raindrop matters. - Mother Teresa giving advice to a young Diana Krahn

If You Do Executive Positioning Work, This Gives You the Formula

I got hooked on Mark's writing with his 2012 book, "Return on Influence," where he explored the quantification of personal reputation. (Six years later, it is STILL far ahead of its time.) In KNOWN, he gives you the action plan for the other side of the equation: building a personal brand in the first place. As many of the other 90 reviews here attest, it's fantastic if you're building your own persona. But there's another crowd that should read it too - professionals who are building other people's executive brands. If you're doing "Executive Positioning" work, either at an agency or in-house, KNOWN lays out the formula for success. And by "success", I don't just mean the kind that makes the company achieve its goals. I mean the kind that helps an executive find the intersection of their personal and professional passions so that everybody wins. If you can do that, you get the authentic, self-fueling, highest impact kind of executive brand results. Mark's writing style is also jargon-free, equipping you with the language you need to have serious conversations with business leaders who don't have a content marketing background.

It seems like these days, everyone wants to be known (myself included). We've been sold this idea that with a global audience at our fingertips, we all have the potential to become celebrities. The internet has done away with most gatekeepers, allowing everyone a shot at stardom and megabucks. But for every PewDie Pie (profiled in Known), there are millions of people who failed to emulate his success. And that's where Known misses the mark for me. While there are plenty of success stories highlighted within, very few words are spent discussing those who, despite being consistent and determined, haven't even made a dent in their desired audience.

I guess I was hoping for a grittier, more realistic look at how unlikely it is that most of us will become 'known' in the first place. Much of the advice in this book is common-sense, and if you've spent even a brief amount of time contemplating starting a gig in the digital age, you'll have heard it all before. I did, however, appreciate Schaefer's take on finding your niche. His 4-step approach to clarifying your focus is worth exploring.

Overall, this is a basic beginner's guide to building a personal brand in the digital age. It's worth picking up if the topic is entirely new to you; otherwise, skip this one.

So Thought-Provoking; So Useful!

Very digestible, written in a lovely conversational style, the warm common sense and humanity of the man behind the words shines through.

For me, this book is a game-changer: I'm a mid-divorce, empty-nester, white middle-class British woman with not a clue who she's meant to be - of herself, or in the world of work.

This book doesn't have all the answers, but it sure asks the right questions, and I've found it truly inspirational as I journey on through not knowing to somewhere, somewhen, when I can say that I know where my space is , who my people are, and what I can do for them.

Thanks, @Mark Schaefer.

When I was pitching for my book to publishers in the summer of 2015 I was told "we are not interested if it's yet another book on personal branding". Lucky for me, my book wasn't. When I heard that Mark Schaefer had written a book on personal branding I thought of this and thought oh dear. I took Mark's book on holiday with me and opened it, the same you would open a revision book. You know you have to do it, but try to think of ways to avoid it. Now there are two types of book on personal branding, a why. This tells you you need one and but does not tell you how. And a book that tells you why, then dives into the technology of social networks and shows you how to set one up technically. Mark's book is a revelation and is completely different. You have to remember that Mark is a "thinker", he strips away everything and through very simple steps, does what he is good at. Gets you thinking. Yes there is a why, but he drops in case studies and there is no, how to set yourself up on LinkedIn. If you want a personal brand, want to start a new career, board in your role and what something else. Find some time and work your way through this. It will probably change your life, and I mean that for the better.

Such a self loathing book of no added value. A soapy story about how the writer, an “underdog” and some other people managed to be known. Some examples, nothing new or inspiring.

I loved his book, the Marketing Rebellion, and I hated this one with passion. I am so annoyed, that I also stopped following him. Really, so much time of my life wasted on this book.

Author Mark Schaefer has long been a favorite of mine since his book Tao of Twitter was released a few years ago. He always delivers reads that are chalk full of practical insights.

KNOWN certainly didn’t disappoint.

One point of his really stuck out for me based on my own personal experience. It reads:

As you’ll see, intelligence, experience, and even having the best idea are secondary to finding a niche that matters and the tenacity to dominate it.

In other word, in today’s media crowded, those seeking to employ a broad, unspecialized brand approach are going to get crushed. In my opinion, a laser focused niche really matters. And the more esoteric the better.

My biggest takeaway from the book is tied to this comment from Mark:

Here’s a trick to get you going: Go to a website called AnswerThePublic.com. On this site, you enter keywords and it delivers questions people are typing into Google about that topic. Essentially, it’s a content idea generator!

Check this site out. It’s a branding masterpiece.

This is a very motivational book. The author is a delightful storyteller and adds touches of humor to the many case studies that are used to illustrate the techniques needed to build your personal brand.

There are stories about bloggers who share there passion using the written word. There are YouTubers who share their musical talent or artistic skills with videos. There are podcasters who produce internet-based radio shows. There are designers, artists and photographers who share visual images on Facebook, Instagram and Pinterest.

Consistency and endurance are the common denominators of all the success stories highlighted in this book.

If you want to be known, read this book and then get started sharing your content and building an audience using social media. Being known can open doors of opportunity in your personal and professional life.

I like everything about this book...it inspires, motivates and educates.

Brand storytelling at its best

Here’s another outstanding book from Mark Schaefer. He uses such a unique storytelling approach to outlining how you can position your personal brand and stand out in an authentic way. The process Mark outlines is easy to follow and understand. Yet, it is the persistent and consistent execution of that process that makes it the true challenge. He doesn’t sugarcoat the fact that becoming known takes incredible dedication. The stories he shares throughout the book are invaluable in seeing how the process can work for you, no matter what your passion is or where you’re starting from. As a personal brand and career coach with 20-plus years of corporate marketing experience, I highly recommend Known if you’re ready to hold a one-of-a-kind place in the hearts and minds of your target audience—and make the impact only you can make.

This is an excellent down to earth informative book! I've read hints of some of the steps in writing, blogging and acting books. But here are the answers I've been searching for, explained in depth!

This is a fantastic read, encouraging yet real. I'm going to reread this and take some notes. I have a lot of thinking to do. It gave me a framework and the guidelines to figure out which direction to move forward in.

I still don't know what to write about, who my audience is nor if I've got the grit to be consistent in writing. Discipline is one of my weaknesses.

But I finally been given the image of the puzzle to start assembling it together, piece by piece. I've been trying to figure this out for quite a few years now.

Well done, Mr Schaefer! You have my appreciation and deep gratitude!

Practical advice. Inspiring, and practical at the same time.

Mark's framework for personal branding includes (1) finding a Place which is a sustainable passion aligned with your goals (2) finding a space, which is essentially a niche, relatively un-explored yet large enough to be worth creating a dent in (3) finding a consistent approach to building content (4) creating a relevant audience base no matter how small. A good thing about the book is that he has shown the hardwork which success stories have done to reach a point of inspiration. e.g. it took 2 years before Moz owner Rand Fishkin got traction through his video blog. Similarly Mark has used other examples who have been succesful because of their consistency over time. Good Read !

I loved this book and I adore Mark. His podcast is also excellent and having listened to it prior to reading the book, I had his voice in my head. He has a great way of encouraging action and teaching how to be successful without coming off as a braggart. Not an easy note to hit! I loved the inspiring real life specific examples which did not define success as "He/She makes more money that they know what to do with," but rather "He/She has designed a business life that they love." Great book for anyone looking to add digital marketing to their business and/or learn more about how to make an impact in the new open source universe where so many marketing tools are available to any one who takes the time to learn and can be brave and try....

This book took a long time to complete. I began in April and finished it in September. It's not an overly long book. It's definitely not a boring book. I just interrupted about midway through because I couldn't wait to get started creating content.

The consistent and constant creation of content is what Marck Schaefer advocates for becoming know in one's field. As a sole practitioner trying to build a coaching business, I devoured Schaefer's advice. I've applied his advice to not only growing my business but to the success of my clients as well.

Schaefer's KNOWN is required reading for those of us seeking to build our space in our place.

Known is knowing

Well considered journey into building your personal brand. Lots of sound, practical, boits-on-the-ground advice. Schaefer emphasis two peinciples: Don't wait until your content us perfect before you put it into the wirkd, rather tryst that the world will meet you where you are, and 2. Action is the optimum component of success in building your personal brand. Good read

A great book! Hurry up and read it before technology advances further. Also, spend the extra money and get the workbook. It's a great investment. Due to some personal commitments, it took me way too long to read this book, but it was helpful to go at a slower pace so I could think some things through concerning the application of the techniques Mark was writing about. I'll need to read it again and work through the workbook, but there is a ton of great actionable information in this book!

I began my journey to create content on LinkedIn last year. As I searched for direction, I came across this book by Schaefer.

Mark is someone whose writing I have followed closely. This was an extremely inspiring book where I almost choked with emotions at the end, reading how some people overcame obstacles to reach their goals and get known.

A must read for anyone following the content path to building their reputation.

“Being known is not the same as being famous. It is not about having millions of fans and red carpet appearances. Being known is about having the proper authority, reputation and audience, to realize your potential and achieve your goals, whatever they might be.”

Well structured, easy to read, and the author fluently casts himself as authoritative.

Known is a very pleasant and engaging book that manages to cover a wide range of topics in an efficient manner. Arguably I don't have much to compare it with, but for my degree of interest, it seems that it did its work perfectly. Highly recommended.

It is actually quite packed with information and food for thought. I will have to read it again at some point of time for a refresh.
