Red-winged blackbird by the lake
It is strange to be, but today feels okay

Hyde Park

|

I went walking into Hyde Park
Nervous over nothin,
Hoping for a somethin but I
Couldnt put my finger on it
Til I saw yours wavin
"Come on over baby," so I
Stumbled straight into your bedroom
Didnt think I’d find you
There and then or how I did
Stumbled, tripped and fell and fallin
Glad I heard it callin
There and then and how I did
Stumbled, tripped and fell and fallin
Glad I heard it callin
There and then and how it did

How does anybody get out of bed before 11?
Have i lost my way again?
Have i lost it?
Or maybe I'm just built to drive and drive and drive to a new city every day
And sleep in someone's guest bed every night
People are so generous, it's true, people are kind
And I can count on change - its constancy, its malleable dependency,
And i will go to therapy again this Monday evening,
Talk about how hard it is to strike some balance in this life
And I will leave feeling the same way I felt walking in
Or maybe with some burden lifted, maybe with some burden bare
And I will do the dishes that I meant to do this morning
And i'll brush my teeth
And go to bed
And try again
And try again
And try again
And try again
And try again
And try again
And try again
And try again
And try again
And try

she ripped up the scratch off and threw it in the yard
the spending money’s easy, the makin money’s hard, hard
but this game wasn’t made to win, baby
might as well fold, you’ve got a losin hand, baby
this game wasn’t made to win darlin -
been fixed and broken from the start
how to go on lovin when the livin breaks your heart?
your heart
a knife to the iris,
a poison kiss,
a slap from the hand that has never once fed
it’s not irony
it’s something more sinister
it’s not bad timing
this is not mercy
this is not mercy
this is a game that wasn’t made to win, baby
might as well fold, you’ve got a losin hand, baby
this game wasn’t made to win darlin -
been fixed and broken from the start,
the start,
how to go on lovin when the livin breaks your heart?

Depot Dog

conflict brimming for no reason
trudgin thru the changing season
lately the leaves are burning golden
like the shimmer in the corner of your eyelid
a throat full of skipping stones
lately lonely, but not alone
windows down cajun music
playin on the bluetooth radio
and Andy always wears
their honesty so well
I’m gonna leave inspired
I’m wearing evening clothes to a matinee show
I am scrambling and exposed
moving backwards and up close
surveilled with nowhere to go
like a bug stuck on a car rearview camera
I’ll put the piles in their place
we’ll wake to see another day
somewhere bright and warm and safe
a thing of legend, like a hot dog from Home Depot
unlikely truth, like a hot dog from Home Depot
against all odds, like a hot dog from Home Depot

Full

|
|||

I fell asleep with the lights on again
Christmas mornin’ sleepy bittersweet reframing
ring it all in, we can trade traditions
lead the way, I will go with you darlin
lead the way, I will go with you darlin
house on the hill, windows fogged up again
Christmas late night contemplative redefinin’
ring it all in, wrapped right up like a gift
fill my plate, I’ll do the dishes darlin
fill my plate, I’ll do the dishes darlin
ring it all in, wrapped right up like a gift
fill my plate, I’ll do the dishes darlin
fill my cup, I’ll do the dishes darlin
fill me up, I’ll do the dishes darlin

Deja vu
01:39
|
|||
|
You slice the radishes
You’ve got déjà vu
You go to band practice
I think about you, I think about you
Can you leave it behind?
Or put it somewhere else?
Building by Frank Lloyd Wright
I think about you, I think about you
it thinks about you too
you win the race by a hair
am I chasin’ my own tail?
climb another flight of stairs
scuff up my boots
I slice the radishes
I’ve got déjà vu
I think about you, I think about you
I think about you, it thinks about you too

Hazards
02:10
|
|||
|
you gotta be kidding me!
I’m stalled out in the middle of the road on my way home from an auto shop that said “bring it back tomorrow”
“you gotta lotta nerve to keep pushin' my luck like that,”
I pray to some god on Fullerton Avenue
my hazards on, my hood is up, I…
you hacked my grocery delivery account
that I made last year when I had Covid on tour in panhandle Florida
you ordered yourself some toothpaste and
Ben and Jerry’s ice cream -
the same flavor that I like to get -
to your apartment in Queens, New York
it felt like I should let you have it, but I…
I…. I…
we’re all just goin through our shit, whether or not we get over it
we’re all just goin through our shit, whether or not we get over it

i’ll swim in sleep with Simon under oaks in mossy dreams
o hundred-hearted woman do you hear me when I cry
in the stillness of the chapel i will sing my lullaby

they skim the surface of the water
leaps of faith, dives of hunger
what a wonder to be sobered,
fully dumbstruck by the beauty of it all
and the scene unfolds in chapters,
bursts of life, the gentle rapture
of the setting sun, bowing
in reverence of surrounding
cypress trees, spanish moss,
of swampy water, heron call
the sky is bleeding every color
her heart wide open, air and water
pulse with breath, the stillness bustling
all changing surely, all moving subtly
all of a sudden, overcoming -
awed and humbled by the beauty of it all
now the waxing moon’s concerto
dragonflies buzz in crescendo
dancing, dining on mosquitos
as the ‘squitos dine on me
cuz everybody’s someone’s dinner here
the show isn’t for free,
I pay my due, I tip my server,
generosity reciprocal
and while it’s true, against his wish
the fisherman ain’t catch no fish
but he caught a beautiful sunset
and he shared it all with me
and we were full
and we were nourished
and we were spoon-fed til we were sated
by the beauty of it all
it feels like magic to slow down
cuz it is magic to slow down
to feel it all move all around me
to feel it all pass all right through me
to know the land that I am from
we meet each other where we are
to be cradled by her power
to sit here with her for hours
what a gift! what a mother!
what a home and what a lover
what a wonder to be welcomed -
full belonging to the beauty of it all

Sky Baby
03:25
|
|||
|
if you were a garden
each flower a song
I’d plant you bouquets-full
our whole springtime long
and if you were a mountain
I would be your fog
wrap round you each mornin
share our every dawn
and if you were a hound dog
could I be your bone?
you can have all my marrow,
carry me round our home
and if you were a dove, dear
please make me your tree
my branches your cradle,
build your nest with me
and if you were the moon, love
I would be your tide
following soft and surely,
all trust and gentle pride
and if I am the setting sun
then you are the sky
i’ll kiss you with ripest color
‘til the evening draws nigh
you are the sky
you are the sky
you are the sky
you are the sky

Thank you card to band
02:16
|
|||
|
it’s two in the mornin’
you’re on your way out -
but i wanted you to know that it heals me
untangling the mystery of trusting again
you wrap up my cables,
you lend me your ears,
you give me so much of your time
for no money
for very, very little money
i don’t think i know how
to thank you
for what you have given me
clock in,
drive safe,
i’ll see you soon,
and you’ll see me, too
