This website is primarily populated by westerners, myself included. This ethical dilemma is commonly depicted within the confines of stealing bread from a business in some form or fashion. In the common depiction its pretty black and white to me. And even if we were to entertain the idea of stealing a loaf of bread from an individual with equal need, we only have to stop and think about it for a second to realize that capitalism and hoarding still created the conditions for this to happen, in which case this continues to be an artificial problem that shouldn’t exist.
We only need to look to history to see how people actually deal with conditions that lead to food scarcity (disasters, economic collapse, war, etc). People tend to share what they have with their neighbors in times of scarcity, often times people go without to their own detriment to make sure their neighbor has what they need to survive. Oftentimes the resources they need are “looted” from businesses, but they get spread around the community nonetheless. The answer to your scenario is to ask your neighbor for some of their bread, or offer your own if you see somebody in need.
Property is theft. Food shouldn’t be witheld from those in need. Stealing bread is an artificial problem that shouldn’t exist. Ezpz

News@lemmy.world•US appeals court declares 158-year-old home distilling ban unconstitutional
291·10 days agoIf it exceeds a particular vapor pressure, the ethanol fumes become too rich to explode, just like any other explosive vapor. The high vapor pressures of a still wouldn’t lend themselves well to exploding. Fires, sure. But unless you’re distilling over an open flame and something horribly wrong happens with your still, it’s not very likely to burst into flames. Most small scale hobbyist stills are electric nowadays

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•What are some good, solid cables for charging and data transfer?
3·12 days agoJust hopping in to glaze Anker a little bit too. I’ve had their 6ft prime (had to look up the model, 240W charging, 480Mpbs data transfer) braided cable for over a year now. It lives knotted up in my work/school bag. I’m not easy on any of my stuff and it’s worked perfectly and looks as good as new.
When I’m at work the cable is sitting on the floorboard of an ambulance cooking to death because the transmission is directly under the cab and heats the floor up so much I use it to warm my lunch. It’s been ripped out of its spot, stepped on, caught and pulled on things and just generally beaten up and still works great

You Should Know@lemmy.world•YSK about precordial catch syndrome: a recurring sharp, stabbing chest pain that worsens when you take a breath and only lasts a minute
7·12 days agoThere’s also pleuritic chest pain, which cen resemble precordial catch but is more severe, can cause the pain to radiate to.your arm or jaw, and gets worse when you inhale. It can happen when you’ve got the flu or some other lung infection and feels an awful lot like a heart attack. In young/healthy people it may not be cause for concern, especially if it only happens once while you’re recovering. But it can also be a sign of severe pneumonia, pulmonary embolism, aortic dissection, lung cancer, and pericarditis. I meant for this to be a fun fact but now I’m realizing it’s more existential horror and health anxiety than educational. Get your chest pain checked out folks
“Leftism” is a response to the failures of liberalism to uphold it’s own values. A bunch of people wentt, “hey this freedom and rights for all stuff sounds pretty rad but it’s not really happening under the system that claims to be making it happen. How would a truly free society actually look, and what do we need to do to get there?” So yeah, it’s based in liberalism inasmuch as leftists are calling liberals hypocrites that failed to uphold their own values and goals
Comrade is pretty commonly used in anarchist circles, at least in my neck of the woods. Some people don’t use it, but it isn’t really controversial/a topic deemed worthy of discussion around here. We’ve got bigger problems than what word we use for “like-minded person aiding us in the struggle”
