about

Stephen Roxborough is a poet who claims Langley, Washington as their home. Rox and I started this project sometime in early 2022 when he approached me to see if I'd be interested in taking a few of his poems and doing some backing "music" for it. As it started out it became apparent that we worked quite well together, he would send me the recordings of his voice from Whidbey Island at his home set up to me in Germantown, Philadelphia through email and then I'd start to throw spaghetti at the wall to see how they'd shape up. I did very little in the way of cutting up his voice (well on all but a couple where I really use this effect like Landscape Art), and you'll notice that he leans pretty hard into rhythm as he delivers his poetry. So when I figured out the tempo he was reciting in, it was amazing to see how it naturally lined up when I put a rhythm track on it. It was a great challenge to make these pieces with Stephen. But it was also a lot of fun as you can probably tell. I haven't done a Stereoearrings project in a while, but this album let me go to this place of open ideas again. I really got to stretch out and explore nearly every instrument in my little music room. I hope you enjoy "Poetica Dystopia" and the poetry of Stephen Roxborough.
