Removed Comment We'd *had* dogs, who we never crated with no issues. We brought home a dog that, from everything we'd been told was fully trained, with no mention of any sort of separation anxiety issues, and from everything we were able to tell beforehand was a well-behaved dog.
The crate was an effort to buy us some time to work on these newly discovered issues without him killing himself.

And dude, it was my parents house when I was a fucking kid. It's a big house that they bought in a not very desirable neighborhood where the previous owner shot himself in one of the bedrooms so they got a good deal on it. The extremely dangerous combination of spontaneous aggression and lack of survival instinct (never seen any other breed headbutt a windshield repeatedly from the inside of a car to try and get at something outside, to and beyond the point of laceration/injury) pitbulls exhibit are, like those of the breed groups above, the result of a lot of selective breeding.

My definition of non-innocence is someone who has caused physical or emotional harm to another living being with malicious intent, regardless of provocation. Cruelty is the intent to repeat. I know I'm giving the asshole answer, but I have worked public safety for decades and these things don't get resolved with reasonable measures until injury occurs. If you aren't willing to allow you or your dog to sustain injuries, the options I gave are it.
