Private Carrels

Graduate students needing space for research and writing may reserve individual study carrels on Levels A and B of Olin Library. Usage guidelines apply.

Service Information

Graduate students in the following schools are eligible to utilize the new Private Carrels service:

  • Arts & Sciences
  • McKelvey School of Engineering
  • Olin Business School
  • Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts
  • School of Public Health
  • School of Continuing & Professional Studies

There are two levels of service for the private carrel program: short-term and long-term.

Short-term Private Carrel reservations are available in three-hour and day-long increments on a first-come, first-served basis. Students should visit the main Olin Library Help Desk on Level 1 to request a short-term Private Carrel.

Long-term Private Carrels are assigned on a five-month basis. Applications open in January and July, and are not available for renewal. Eligible applicants are chosen via a random selection process.

Usage Guidelines

  • Carrels are designed to provide quiet space for research and study; carrels are not to be used as offices, and holding office hours or meetings is strictly prohibited.
  • Noise, including phone conversations and video or audio conferencing, should be kept to a minimum and may be heard by others nearby. Earphones should be used when listening to audio.
  • Know the Olin Library building and Help Desk hours of operation.
  • If you have checked out a short-term carrel (3-hour or 12-hour), the key is due before the Help Desk closes.
  • Turn off all lights before leaving the carrel.
  • You may not remain in carrels when the building is closed or during alarms and emergencies.
  • Patrons are responsible for maintaining their assigned carrels and may be held liable for any damage resulting from their use. All carrels will be checked periodically by library staff for compliance with carrel guidelines.
  • The library does not assume responsibility for items kept in carrels and will not be liable for lost or damaged belongings.
  • All library materials kept in study carrels must be property checked out to carrel holders.
  • Drinks are allowed only in covered containers. Do not leave food or drinks overnight.
  • Use of toasters, steamers, or other electrical heating devices is strictly prohibited, as is smoking, vaping, and the use of e-cigarettes or similar devices.
  • Carrel holders are responsible for keys, and there is a $15 replacement charge for lost keys.
  • Library furniture from other locations may not be moved into carrels.

Failure to comply with these guidelines or rules for building usage may result in the carrel privileges being revoked.

A complete list of usage guidelines is also posted in each carrel. Report any problems or concerns to Olin Library Help Desk staff via email ([email protected]) or phone at 314- 935-5420.
