So I’ve been thinking about this more, instead of a single store, what if they were to try to form a union of all Starbucks employees in the Seattle area? It’d be much harder for Starbucks to pull a “close the store and open a new one” play if it was for every Starbucks in an area.

I think the biggest thing that blows my mind about this whole AI rush is that we were finally starting to get security ingrained in people’s minds and have them understand the risks of data exfiltration and reputation damage, even holding companies responsible for data breaches and then…… throw everything out the window with security because AI

Ironically I think that about China. I could still say “Fuck the US and Trump” here relatively easily. If were to say “Fuck China and Xi” there’s a relatively good chance I could get disappeared.

That’s…. a stretch. The issue is that the default CA that manufacturers include is Microsoft, so Debian developed a shim, signed by Microsoft, so that they could sign their own distros ans modules.

Since a lot of boards allow you to inject your own key into the MOK for UEFI, you can basically roll your own with a little work. It’s just not “out of the box” since they’d have to validate multiple different distros.

It’s more a matter of sheer size of Microsoft vs Linux rather than locking. I’ve said “a lot” and “most” around boards given that I’m not sure what the breakdown is, but I haven’t seen a board that doesn’t do that.

Secure boot by itself isn’t a bad thing. It basically just says the OS you boot from has to have a signed and approved bootloader/drivers. The problem is, the approval list is handled by the board manufacturer and not every version of Linux supports it since it has to be signed and approved. Also, if you have unsigned kernel level modules (such as an open source video driver) that can cause the process the break as the driver isn’t signed. I believe user space is much more accepting.

From a privacy aspect, it isn’t directly impacting, except it limits which distros you use, and may prevent you from doing other privacy related changes as a low level or forcing you to use signed binaries that you may not be able to audit.

Edit: a few notes as I went diving further. So Microsoft actually controls the root CA that SecureBoot is based on and signs other apps, including Linux and then they add their own shims in. So sadly MS still has control out of the box.

However, it is possible on most (not all) systems to add in your own signing keys to the secureboot enclave. So with enough work you can do it yourself, but you basically have to make sure everything is signed with your key when you compile the kernel and associated drivers.

Many people will switch to Linux (people will still work around SystemD, so don’t bring that up).

The part that will be the killer move is when they enact a law requiring all US hosted websites to enact age verification via attestation from the operating system. Some savvy people will get around that while they still have root, but then you’re gonna see a Google Play Services style ramp up where the attestation will only pass if Secure Boot is enabled, and eventually root is restricted.

So my only thought about joining NATO… since it’s a defensive pact, the moment they join, they would immediately trigger Article 5. Wouldn’t the vote then basically “going to war with Russia” vs “joining NATO for future defense”?

Don’t get me wrong, I fully believe Ukraine should get all the support and Russia is attacking a sovereign nation, but I’m trying to figure out logistics of it, if it were to happen right now.

Unions need to have regional authority. If one store is closed, the union will automatically be instantiated in any other store that opens in the area. If you don’t like unions that much, then withdraw completely and lose that revenue.

Which is ironic, because I find admitting and owning up to mistakes more honorable than trying to brush it under the tatami.

I remember seeing elementary kids use the subways in Hong Kong by themselves. In Japan there are kids everywhere taking themselves to and from school. Why does mom need a car to tote them around if the city and transportation are built out correctly.

I’m still trying to figure out what the dollar value of tokens actually mean. OpenAI touts “$1800 worth of tokens for a $20 account” and that ultimately people should be spending half their salary in tokens.

But what does $1800 actually mean? Is it perceived work value saying “you can replace $1800 you spend on people hours in tokens”? Or is it how much the infrastructure costs them to run those tokens? If so, they’re running at a major loss.

People throw around those values, but I have yet to see it tied to something with a real world equivalent. It’s 1800 Schrute Bucks for all I can tell.
