“Music is ever present in the book. It’s what brings all the characters together, it’s in the lyrics Joey writes, in the melodies the band creates together in their daily rehearsals and long night practices, in their music classes at the school, in their earplugs while they lazily hang out in Joey’s room. It’s in the concerts they’ve played, at their graduation day, and the album they ultimately create together.

It’s in each single page of the book. Inside and out. There are so many amazing songs which I played on repeat for each chapter of the book, helping me write the lines and figure out all the emotions I wanted to translate into Joey’s thoughts. The emotions I needed were all there in all those songs, in the melodies and beautiful voices of those skilled musicians, and all I had to do was listen. Music is my inspiration – to me, music is the closest we have to magic in this world.
Each chapter of The Lost Boys was inspired by a song.”
