Abstract

The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition, outlines nearly a dozen anxiety disorders and phobias that can be diagnosed in children. Most anxiety disorders include a criterion requiring interference in social and academic situations. As a diagnostic group, social interference can include, but is not limited to, social withdrawal, shyness, problematic peer relations, parent-child interaction difficulties, skills deficits, and cognitive distortions. Given the relevance social difficulties have in anxiety disorders, it is surprising that the assessment and treatment of social skills deficits, as well as social behavior difficulties, in children with anxiety disorders have received relatively little attention with the exception of social phobia. This chapter will examine the relationship between anxiety disorders and social skills difficulties with a particular focus on social phobia, given its relevance to the theme of this volume and the relevant research that has occurred in that area. Topics to be reviewed include the unique impact of social skills problems on individuals with anxiety disorders, as well as the assessment and treatment of social skills deficits in anxiety-disordered children.

The authors would like to thank Melissa Munson for her assistance on a prior edition of this chapter. The terms “child” and “children” are used throughout and usually meant to include adolescents.
