Day 8 - 💪of my project has been productive! I have started building a React JS and CRUD application with a .NET Core 6.0 Web API. 😎To ensure seamless functionality, I have utilized various HTTP operations, including GET, POST, DELETE, and PATCH. ✈️For the back end, I use the Web API and Entity Framework, while I use SQL Server for the database. I actually like the polls feature here on LinkedIn, so I wanted to build something similar. This was a great way for me to strengthen my backend skills and get familiar with Firebase so that I can keep track of votes live over time, and the user can also see the stats after selecting a choice, much like the LinkedIn polls. 🚀 Day 2 of HTML Learning - Topic: Creating Tables! 🖥️ Today, I dived into one of the most fundamental aspects of HTML – Tables! 📊 It's amazing how much structure and organization tables can bring to a webpage, and I learned all about the key tags that help build them: 🔹 <table>: The container for the table. 🔹 <tr>: Defines a row in the table. 🔹 <td>: Defines a cell in the table. 🔹 <th>: Used for table header cells. 🔹 <thead>, <tbody>, and <tfoot>: Used to organize different sections of the table. I practiced building tables for displaying structured data, and I'm excited to see how I can apply this knowledge to future web projects. The more I learn, the more I realize how important clean, well-organized code is in creating efficient and user-friendly websites. Here's something that I've learned from having pivoted a few times over the last 30 years myself and from the 100's of people I've known over the course of the last 10+ years that I've been in recruiting and career coaching who have also made successful pivots: ✅ As long as you're pragmatic about the fact that you have gaps to cover and ground to make up but are willing to put in the work to even the field... ✅ As long as you're willing to push past your comfort zone.. ✅ As long as you keep putting one foot in front of the other... ✅ As long as you heed good advice and throw out bad advice... ✅ As long as you have a job search plan that you not only know how to execute but modify along the way... I promise you, no matter how daunting nor difficult the journey ahead may appear, you will get to your destination and a year after that, you'll look back at where you were just 12 months before and you'll not only be proud of what you achieved but you'll be able to look at what you've gained and you'll know the trials and travails that you had to go through to land that first big job was worth it. Always remember, career success starts with a strategic plan and job searching is a marathon, not a sprint. Software Engineering Joys: One of my favorite things as I’ve grown in my career is the ability to jump between programming languages as I find them suitable for the current task. At my old gig, I would often go back and forth between Python, Go, and SQL. It was fun because they felt different. We used Python for a lot of our production code, and I used Go for personal tools. I loved the power and simplicity of Go, and I like hacking data pipelines in Python. I also love its ability to prototype. Currently, I’ve spent the majority of my time over the last two days in Python and Bash, and I find it so cool how quickly I’m able to iterate and script in these languages. Having spent two days in these languages, I miss C++! I miss the power and expressiveness of it. I love the fact that adding debugging symbols can make the program too slow to keep up with data. I’m amazed at how quickly data can move through the GPU. It’s an awesome language with access to so much! Each of these languages has taught me something different, and I find the variety and pace of each refreshing when I haven’t worked with them in awhile. If you are still learning your first language, that’s great! Keep it up! If you are considering learning a second language, do it. That was the one that felt like it unlocked the door for me. After I learned two I knew I could work with any. Keep at it, and be thankful people have dedicated so much time to making it enjoyable for us to solve (create?) problems on computers. Lately, I’ve been diving deep into JavaScript, tackling 10 beginner challenges a day to really hone my skills. But there’s been an unexpected twist: GitHub Copilot. 😅 Don’t get me wrong, Copilot is an incredible tool that suggests code snippets, but it’s been more like that overly helpful friend who gives you all the answers before you even try. Instead of learning, it felt like cheating every time it auto-completed my code—definitely not helpful for my learning process. While I appreciated it saving me time on Python, it’s a different story with JavaScript. So, I’ve decided to disable Copilot while writing JavaScript. I don’t even want to see the suggestions; it’s like reading the ending before starting the book—no fun at all! So, it’s Bye Bye Copilot for now. We’ll meet again when I’m more proficient in JavaScript. Until then, save your efforts for the experts who’ve seen it all before!

🚀 How a Software Leader Plans a Job Search 🚀 When you spend years leading software development teams, you can’t not see the world as a series of workflows, priorities, and “what’s blocking us today?” So, when it came time to plan my job search, I did what any software leader would do — I built a Kanban board for it! 📋💥 After a week and a half of learning all that goes into modern job searching (spoiler: it’s more complex than a production release), I realized I needed a system to avoid paralysis by analysis. So, I broke it down into epics like: 📍 LinkedIn — Profile updates, posts (like this one!), and engagement. 📍 Marketing Plan — Defining the “Mark Shipley brand.” 📍 Core Résumé — Building a strong résumé (because it’s been… a while) to serve as the foundation for tailored versions later. 📍 Recruiters — Building relationships and staying top-of-mind. 📍 Networking Plan — Reaching out, following up, and remembering to actually hit “send.” 📍 Target Companies — Pinpointing where I want to work. 📍 Upskilling — Because learning never stops (looking at you, Duolingo streak). 📍 Other — The catch-all for “Where do I even put this task?” You might notice Interview Prep isn’t on the board yet. That’s by design. Once the applications start rolling, that’ll get its own epic (with extra coffee budget). As Thanksgiving and the holidays as a whole approaches, use this time to take and reflect on how far you come and where you have to go to get to your goals. During my early tech support days I remember having my A+ 901 studying for the 902, and the only tech support technician at work on Black Friday taking calls and telling myself I wouldn't be in this same position the following year and low and behold I wasn't. Take the time to breathe for a short period this holiday season but also don't forget your goals either whether you want to knock it out before this year is over or at the start of 2025, make sure you still have that goal in front of you.
