Digitised copies of First Aid to the Injured
Digitised copies of First Aid to the Injured
The St John Ambulance Association's lectures on ‘First Aid to the Injured’ were developed into its first aid manuals, first published in 1878 titled 'Handbook Describing Aids for Cases of Injury or Sudden Illness'. These items were digitised through a generous financial donation from the St John Historical society. Some items reflect the language and values of their period, and may contain offensive or discriminatory language, terminology, and images or illustrations that may be upsetting for other reasons. Where possible, we will indicate the existence of this material so that our users are informed.
Veronica Nisbet's WW1 Scrapbook
Veronica Nisbet's WW1 Scrapbook
Veronica Nisbet was a St John Voluntary Aid Detachment Nurse during the First World War. As an artist, Veronica documented her wartime experiences through a series of sketches and cartoons which form the basis of her scrapbook, alongside photographs and newspaper clippings. She captures, from a very personal, and often humorous perspective the endeavours of the endeavours to heal and care for the sick and wounded soldiers by the St John Ambulance Brigade Hospital in Étaples, thus working for the Order’s principle of ‘in the service of humanity’.
