On September 15, 2024, the NYPD committed a mass shooting at the Sutter Avenue Station.
On suspicion that Derell Mickles evaded the subway fare, police officers tried to murder him and tased then shot him multiple times. In addition, they shot carelessly into a crowded subway platform, hitting two other passengers, leaving one with bullet fragments lodged in their body and the other with permanent traumatic brain damage.
With hopes of justifying their actions, the NYPD quickly released body-cam footage showing Mickles evading the $2.90 subway fare and carrying a small knife, which Mickles never used. Mickles was arraigned from his hospital bed and overcharged with 8 counts, including 5 bogus felony charges, aggravated assault against a police officer with a deadly weapon, and assault with the intention to cause serious injury with a weapon.
Derell Mickles pleaded not guilty and is waiting to go to trial. He has been locked up at Rikers for over a year.
For nearly two years, Derell has survived in a death camp on Rikers Island with a bullet in his leg.
