Open Letter to Industry: Generative AI in Beer Evaluation
Open Letter to Industry: Generative AI in Beer Evaluation
The use of AI in beverage sensory evaluation should not and cannot be used as a substitute for real human judging. Even supplementing using AI tools has massive negative implications for the industry at large, the producer, the competition, and the judge. It leaves massive spaces for corruption, bias and greed to proliferate. It also doesn't address organizational shortcomings, or increase competition throughput, as humans are needed to collect, sort, pour, and deliver entries to judges. Nothing of substance is created from using these systems, it is simply transforming data based on inference, assumption, and training bias.

Brewers are a prognosticating bunch. It was early March that we last asked a group of producers to drop their predictions on the next big beer style. What did we learn? To some, the continued dominance of hazy IPAs is clear. To others, the nascent cold IPA category is primed to turn up the heat.
