Jonathan Waldo Maddie Ashman could have made these absolutely transcendent songs with her incredible voice and composition skills in equal temperament but that would have been too easy. It would left too much on the table. To do this in just intonation, it's so much more impressive and requires relearning how to sing and play all the instruments. It feels natural when it shouldn't. It's like ripping the veil off a new dimension of music that was previously relegated to experimental composers and academics. Favorite track: behind closed eyes.

rumours 03:57
Rumours go round I’m dizzy with these stories that I’ve heard (Keeping you still close Even though you’ve gone) Can’t play it down Pretending I’m not hooked on every word (Followed by ghosts of you Your shadow haunts me) How do you find (how do you find) This power play that keeps us intertwined (Do you hear of me too? Are you thinking of me like I think of you?) Plays on my mind (plays on my mind) I’m grounded but I’m falling every time Now you’re out of my life Now you’re out Now Now you’re out Now Now you’re out Now Now you’re out (now) I’m hoping one day I can let you go Maybe not Now that you’re gone You’ve never been more there (gone) You’ve never been more there (gone) Never showed up, always on your terms You’ve never been more there Never showed up, always on your terms You’ve never been more there Gone You’ve never been more there Gone You’ve never been more there

Faces Cracked and Hands that Hold too tight Jaded Acquainted An aching A- failing A- that I’ll never feel A- changing Cause what if if I don’t like her at all Walls I call my home These walls are all i've ever known I’m afraid to let them go These walls I call my home These walls are all i've ever known I’m afraid I love control Never cry It’s disappointing when I try Cold I’m Strong as stone I stay like this I can’t get hurt You look unwell My dear You’re missing out These walls I call my home These walls are all i've ever known I’m afraid to let them go

she said 02:51
Her tea lies cold Scared to leave stains in her mouth (or theirs) Whispers catch on Don’t kill the mood She said She was only scared When it happened She was only scared In that moment She was unprepared for that moment I dare not to ask Safe with her mask And fine Not something you keep Innocence slips like a shawl He gets off to sleep He moves on She just can’t keep out of his Hands it happens Cant keep holding this Off till she’s had it Almost frightening To imagine How it would be told While her tea lies cold

seraphim 04:59
Ave And saint (take me) Ave And Santa Maria Saint Mary Overie (be here, be with) Deliver and carry (hold tight, hold close) Our river reverie (north south) To know with (east west) Certainty where we (hold us, down) Closely will lie (lie down, lie down, lie down) Each hand that touched me knew me not at all Call us wild geese and we’ll fly away Follow the river to find our grave Are we most holy or just depraved When people want us they find a way We want to wander but seem to stay Souls like our bodies will we be saved? We survey Here on the quay Is ours now All this Left to us Sirens Ave And saint (take me) Mary Ever overboard

Skylight low And fading Time so slow When waiting Would it hurt To let go Rooted by these depths below I call home Still dancing An endless loop I know all of the moves Words of praise Fall like rain Ever more I’m washed away I could drown if I stay Who am I then Asking myself Again and again Skylights low And fading An ending Beginning

about

an EP that uses alternative tuning systems to explore the liminal space between emotions, reality and perception <3

The project is written using just intonation, that is pure tuning. I wanted to write a collection that turned away from man-made equal temperament (the 12 notes we are used to in western music today eg on piano), looking at microtonal harmonies and alternative tuning systems.

The lyrics seek to talk about the things we don’t talk about: intimate or shameful secrets we hold to ourselves, unmet desires, repressed feelings, the toll of societal expectations.

about

Maddie Ashman London, UK

Hello! I am a composer and songwriter from London. I love writing microtonal music- in particular, I am fascinated by the resonance and unlimited possibilities of just intonation (pure tuning).

I love writing music that is genre-fluid, and I love challenging the boundaries of instruments. I'm interested in the 'unspoken', 'what ifs' and 'unexpected'.

Lots to come this year! <3
