I Studied 8 Backend Languages on a $12 Server. The Real Bottleneck Wasn’t the Language
Rust, Go, Java, C#, Bun, Node, Python and PHP were all tested on the same tiny server. The ranking was not the most interesting part.
Every developer has had this argument: “Language X is faster, so we should use it.” Someone else replies, “The database is the real bottleneck anyway.” Both people are partly right, and a recent public benchmark shows how.
A YouTube creator took one small application, rebuilt it in eight backend stacks, and ran 16 hours of load tests on a $12 virtual server. This article walks through what was tested, what the numbers showed, and what I think the results mean for real projects.
The Setup: One Small Server, One Fair Test
The server was modest on purpose: one shared CPU core at 2.3 GHz, 2 GB of RAM, and 50 GB of storage. Node, Nginx and Postgres all ran on the same machine, which is how many startups and side projects are deployed.
The app was a tiny Twitter-style API with four actions: load a feed, open a post, like a post, and create a post. The database held 50,000 users, 500,000 posts, and a little over 2 million likes, about 350 MB in total. That is…
