Isgubhu, a Zulu word meaning “beat”, celebrates an evergreen and ever-growing set of dance and electronic genres and subgenres sweeping the African continent, from amapiano, gqom and Afro-house to kwaito, Shangaan electro and more. For the latest Isgubhu DJ mix, Apple Music called on Joburg-born, Los Angeles-based producer Vumaala to share his vision of Isgubhu. “The tracks I’ve chosen fall into two camps,” Vumaala says. “Insatiable momentum or emotive resonance. Producers like Mpho.Wav, Jnr SA, Thakzin and NAAK are masterful curators of momentum. Their tracks pull me forward in a way that’s markedly exciting. Whereas on the other hand, producers like JAZZWRLD are so good at evoking emotion. And I use a track like ‘Bengicela’ as an emotional moment of grounding.” Hear Vumaala’s idea of Isgubhu and check back for more one-of-a-kind mixes.
