Between the melodic brand of hip-hop prevalent today and the emo-rap revival lurking around the corner, there’s perhaps no better time for a boundary-blurring artist like FattMack to shine. Still barely out of his teens, the Mobile, Alabama, artist carries his influences proudly into the contemporary rap world on this third volume of his Mr. Did It By Hisself series. Arriving some eight months after the personal, at times cathartic McKenzie, this project provides him with an opportunity to re-up with existing fans while luring in new ones. His charm is evident from the jump here, blasting off with the tough-love opener “Astronaut” and continuing the trek on blown-out yet oddly beautiful tracks like “Passionate Killer” and “Redeye”. He freely indulges his rock-star urges with pop-punk cutaways “Done with Xans” and “Jason Vorhees” while drawing upon a shoegaze haze for the withdrawal woes of “All Love, Life Goes On”.
