Isgubhu: Best of 2025

The African continent has a rich history in dance music, with a number of its contagious sounds being spun across the globe. Isgubhu—a Zulu word meaning “beat”, often used to describe a banging track—celebrates an evergreen and ever-growing set of dance and electronic genres and sub-genres sweeping the continent, including amapiano, gqom, Afro-house, kwaito, Shangaan electro and more. Few people in African dance can claim to have had the year that JAZZWRLD (formerly known as Jazzworx) and Thukuthela did. The pair, whose production strikes a consistent balance between amapiano and 3-step, delivered charting singles like “Uzizwa Kanjan”, “Isaka (6am)”, “Tholukuthi (Clap Song)” and “Bengicela”, ensuring that their September-released album The Most Wanted played like a greatest-hits compilation. Their work across 2025 is what catapulted the duo into superstardom as leaders in 3-step, affirming the album title as confirmation of the duo’s versatility and of the genre’s breadth. In 2025, JAZZWRLD and Thukuthela were the sound of Isgubhu.
