R3SET

R3SET

One of the key architects behind trap’s rise to prominence and chart dominance in the 2010s, Mike WiLL Made-It helped put some of hip-hop’s biggest contemporary stars in lofty positions. The Georgia native and EarDrummers impresario logged a staggering number of hits for the likes of Future and 2 Chainz, broadening beyond his Southern base to build big with Kendrick Lamar and Rihanna. Despite these successes and two of the most recognisable producer tags of all time, he’s largely avoided the solo-album route, with 2017’s Ransom 2 being a notable and star-studded exception. Nine years later, he returns to the spotlight with the aptly named R3SET, a fresh opportunity to cement his presence in a new decade. As with his prior full-length, he’s brought along a plethora of hip-hop talent, including rappers he’s worked closely with over the years. 21 Savage kicks things off with the booming “ATL (APPR3CIAT3 TH3 LOV3)”, followed not long thereafter by a noticeably rejuvenated Young Thug on “RUSSIAN ROULETT3”. Other notables here include trap pioneer OJ Da Juiceman on “STOV3 LIT” and Goodie Mob capo CeeLo Green on the humble, soulful digression “ALL I KNOW”, not to mention the all-star trio of Killer Mike, T.I. and Young Dro on “MON3Y TALK$”. Though many of these team-ups will, no doubt, evoke nostalgia in Mike WiLL’s existing fanbase, what makes R3SET live up to its name comes via the newer blood infused into the mix. KARRAHBOOO and Anycia join Mississippi vet J Money on “MY WAY”, while Monaleo vibes with Atlanta faves Travis Porter on “STANDING O”. Indeed, the producer’s savvy approach to curation leads to all manner of cross-generational collabs here, not the least of which being “ROOMS” with both Chief Keef and YoungBoy Never Broke Again.
