PRAY FOR ME

PRAY FOR ME

RAAHiiM’s childhood roots in the church have occasionally cropped up in his after-hours R&B soliloquies, but on his third proper album, the Toronto singer’s lover-boy blues assume the gravitas of a full-blown spiritual crisis. PRAY FOR ME begins with “On God”, a surrealist swirl of sampled preacher-man chatter and gospel-soul grooves that sets the tone for a record that explores the symbiotic nature of romantic temptation and religious devotion. But even as PRAY FOR ME floats across a dreamlike diorama of Caribbean club beats (“WiiCKEDEST”), dusty ’90s-throwback drum loops (“Everyone’s Girl”) and post-“NOKIA” booty-bass bangers (“SAVE A MOMENT”), RAAHiiM’s velvet-smooth yet vulnerable voice makes the seediest strip-club escapades and bitter breakup conversations feel sweet and wholesome.
