Isgubhu, a Zulu word meaning “beat”, celebrates an evergreen and ever-growing set of dance and electronic genres and sub-genres sweeping the African continent, from amapiano, gqom and Afro-house to kwaito, Shangaan electro and more. For the latest Isgubhu playlist DJ mix, Apple Music enlisted Vigro Deep, the DJ and producer whose album Baby Boy V is heating up dance floors across the African continent and beyond. Deep chose to include tracks from some of his favourite collaborators, people like Dlala Thukzin, Kabza De Small and DJ Maphorisa, who he points to as having played an integral part in his journey. “I selected a mix of African artists who are pioneers of their own sounds and have a unique music identity, which is something I find very important,” he says. “The mix includes some of my favourite amapiano, 3-step and deep house tracks which have also been inspirations in my sound. Lastly, it celebrates the finale of the Baby Boy series, which for me has always been about the sounds from home, with the release of my recent album Baby Boy V.” Hear what Isghubu sounds like to Vigro Deep’s ears and check back for more one-of-a-kind mixes.
