A Body Of Voices

A Body Of Voices

Jimmy LaValle’s long-running The Album Leaf project has been largely known for gauzy, ambient-leaning instrumentals with minimal guest vocal contributions; 2023’s Future Falling featured appearances from shadowy pop figures Bat for Lashes and Kimbra, while its follow-up Rotations from 2025 returned to the largely wordless terrain he’s often traversed. For The Album Leaf’s ninth album, A Body of Voices, LaValle takes its title to a literal endpoint by embracing vocal-led ambient pop more than ever before, resulting in a collection of tunes that are surprisingly straightforward while retaining his penchant for darkly shaded soundscapes and electronic tapestry-weaving. Alongside contributions from folks like Twin Shadow and Warpaint’s Theresa Wayman, Hundred Waters vocalist Nicole Miglis sounds right at home on the ascending tones of “Turns”, while Stephen McBean of Canadian hard-rock howlers Black Mountain is startlingly soulful on the synth-pop gem “True Love, Don’t Be Afraid”.
