Young Poet - EP

Music runs in the blood of young Nigerian rapper and songwriter Champz. The son of Afrobeats icon Wizkid, the teenager made a big splash when videos of him recording music emerged on the internet late in 2025. Those recording sessions ultimately led to the release of his debut project, Champion’s Arrival, in November 2025. With the EP, the MC became the youngest act to reach the number one position in the history of Apple Music Nigeria’s Top Albums chart. Mere months after Champion’s Arrival, 14-year-old Champz returns with Young Poet, an EP favouring minimalism over extravagance, highlighting a keen grasp of grime and Afroswing, played out over amapiano-inspired production. “I’m just here to vibe, kama jo kama dancia,” he raps on opener “Bad Guyz” with Paranormal DJ. On “Militia”, Champz places his success in historical context, pointing out that it was a given thanks to his ancestry. “Number one, man, it runs in the fam,” he reels off atop Fade Venom’s instrumental. When Champz leans into chest-thumping bravado, he does so with a preternatural ease, deconstructing the significant military history of his last name on “War Lord” and declaring, in the same breath, that he was made for music. Champz experiments with a trap flow on “Shut the Block Down”, reminiscing on the challenges that paved his path to stardom and his plans for the future. It’s an earnest closer that feels true to a hero’s journey still very much unfolding.
