“If I can kill a beat, I can heal the trenches,” NoCap attests on “GPS”. That’s the ethos of the YoungBoy NBA signee in a nutshell: using his music as a vehicle to convey the experiences in his hood of Mobile, Alabama, while processing his own pain. He continues this with Heaven on Mars, using a set of low-key sound beds to back Auto-Tuned vocals and a songwriting style that varies between hauntingly specific and lyrically abstract. On “Astronaut Tears/Love Don’t Stay”, he intersperses verses that mournfully chronicle moving on after the loss of a loved one between vocals from a gospel choir, while “Turks & Caicos” takes street sensibilities overseas for a tropical vacation. “Agency”, meanwhile, finds NoCap emotionlessly flaunting his wealth, begging for a woman to break his heart just so he’ll feel something. But on “Complicated”, he boasts of his success after legal troubles and being counted out. “Whole world tried to judge my wrong/All of a sudden, I’m sittin’ courtside,” he proudly declares. Through so many bouts of depression, any reason to celebrate is well-received.
