I actually just downloaded a copy of Kaguya-hime and skimmed through it a bit—it looks absolutely gorgeous. I plan to watch it soon for sure. A lot of my friends are really big on Takahata's works, so I've heard no shortage of praise!

Yeah, there are quite a few anime-original episodes, and inversely there are also manga chapters that were never adapted (such as Vogare Longa... big sad). But yeah, I just felt that I should point out Ai's inclusion, because I could only assume it would seem confusing to not know the context of her role in the anime. I think it was a very smart move on Junichi Satou's part, though, as it helped flesh out an aspect of the manga that would've otherwise been fairly difficult to portray (without questions as to who Akari is messaging arising at one point or another).

Erin is simply fantastic, but I understand how longer series can be a bit daunting. On the one hand, it's nice to knock out a bunch of shorter series and experience a wide range of different stories, but longer series really have so much to offer in the way of character development. Kaleido Star's another example of a longer series I love for that very reason.

Also yeah, I actually started with Liz as well. Glad to hear you enjoyed it because my first experience was much different. I thought it was well-crafted, but it dragged a little too much for my taste. However, now that I'm watching Hibike I'm beginning to appreciate Liz much more in retrospect, and I look forward to revisiting it soon. Speaking of Hibike though, I strongly recommend continuing when you get the chance. Kumiko really shatters the high school girl stereotype seen in most anime, and is honestly the most realistic character I've ever seen in such a role.

I've actually been sleeping on Takahata for quite some time now. I should really fix that, lol. I plan to at least start familiarizing myself with his works over the next month, so I'll let you know what I think! I'll probably start with Kaguya-hime and then just wing it from there. And regarding Anne as a brilliant lead, I'd also like to recommend Kemono no Souja Erin. It seems the lead characters are often compared—not in the sense of being similar, but for how well-developed they are over the course of their respective series. Erin is my personal favorite protagonist of all-time. :D

Yeah, it is pretty surprising but people often see the critical reception of Aria and think they can skip straight to the end and enjoy it without context. It's episodic in nature, sure, but there's still an underlying story and the character development is crucial. Oh, btw, since you're jumping in on the third season I have to fill you in: Ai Aino was introduced in the first episode of season one and serves as a replacement of the unknown recipient of Akari's emails in the manga. She's occasionally visited Aqua in a handful of anime-original episodes as well.

Tbh I've already cleared my mind of DL, lmao. I've been hooked on Hibike! Euphonium, and that's definitely been doing the trick.

Considering the kinetic novel can be roughly 120-150 hours long with no choices or playable elements aside from one thing in the final episode, I'd say that the manga should be completely fine if you don't have that amount of time to spend. Some people dislike how parts of the manga are a little more blatant in regards to its mystery, but at the same time it can help depict certain things better visually and others also argue that it actually concludes the story a bit better. Overall it still does a good job at relaying what Umineko is.

Ahh, that makes sense! Didn't check your manga list. Whenever I see someone watching Aria in my feed I check to see if they like it so I can recruit them to my cult. Jokes aside, you'd be surprised to hear that I've encountered a handful of individuals who skip straight to AtO because they think it's another purely episodic series like Mushishi or something, lol. I've actually yet to see Anne (much to the dismay of my friends), but I hear it's great, so I hope you enjoy that as well!

Also regarding Aria: I'm in the minority of hardcore fans, but I actually prefer the adaptation as well. The music works wonders for the overall atmosphere, and the characters' voices and catchphrases really add to their charm.

Dead Leaves was.. ugh. That was terrible. It felt like it was trying to give me epilepsy the entire time, with little to no room to breathe. The humor missed the mark, and I didn't care for the art style either. Over-the-top shows like that really swing one way or the other for me. On one hand I love shows like KLK and Symphogear, but on the other I hate FLCL and (now) Dead Leaves, lol. Can't really put a finger on it. It's either a huge hit or a huge miss with that campy shit.
