What is the "Mamdani Act"? GOP bill would ban socialists, Marxists from US (newsweek.com)

Community iconc/politics@lemmy.world by
Sunflier@lemmy.world

The Mamdani Act would amend existing immigration law to prohibit the admission and naturalization of any noncitizen who is or was a member of, affiliated with, or advocates for a Chinese communist, communist, socialist, Islamic fundamentalist or other totalitarian party—or any organization that advocates those ideologies. Under its deportation provisions, a noncitizen already in the United States could be removed if they engage in advocacy for socialism, communism, Marxism or Islamic fundamentalism, distribute or publish material promoting those ideologies or hold membership in affiliated organizations at any point after admission.

What I Learned About Billionaires at Jeff Bezos’s Private Retreat (theatlantic.com)

Community iconc/politics@piefed.social by
Rimu@piefed.social
he/him 1 hour ago

Decades of research in developmental psychology have shown that moral reasoning develops through consequences—not punishment, necessarily, but experiencing the effects of your actions on others, receiving honest feedback, having to accommodate reality as it actually is rather than as you wish it to be. It’s not that the wealthy become evil; it’s that their environment stops teaching them the things that nonwealthy people are forced to learn simply by living in a world that pushes back. When you can buy your way out of any mistake, when you can fire anyone who disagrees with you, when your social circle consists entirely of people who need something from you, the basic mechanism by which humans learn that other people are real goes dark.

Looking for games for my friend. She’s mostly looking for a casual timewaster for a bit of enjoyable escapism. She historically liked some of the “merge games” where it’s about merging icons on a grid, and a couple of the more traditional idle games but its so hard to find any without summy practices like dark patterns and abusive monitization.

Comet R3 PanSTARRS over a Himalayan Valley

c/photography@lemmy.world by
Innerworld@lemmy.world

The best way to see comet R3 PanSTARRS’s long tail is with a camera. This week, the recently brightened comet appears in northern skies to the east just before dawn, but is only barely visible to the unaided eye. The many-degree ion tail captured on long duration camera exposures is not unusual for a comet - it is primarily due to the Earth’s nearly sideways view of the tail as it points away from the Sun. In the featured image taken last week, Comet C/2025 R3 (PanSTARRS) showed off its flowing tail through a valley between two peaks in the Himalayan mountains of India. The comet passed its closest to the Sun yesterday. As it nears its closest approach to Earth next week, a bushy dust tail may become visible. The comet is slowly moving out of northern skies and by the end of the month will be visible after sunset in southern skies as it fades and leaves our Solar System.
