The Way Things Are When Ryuko Kiwatamura moves back to Tokyo from New Jersey, he has trouble finding his place in a high school where kids follow social norms he is not used to. The only person in his class who seems genuinely interested in getting to know him is the bookish Mai, and her best friend: the reserved, but surprisingly outspoken boy, Kai Kumisaki. He is struggling with school, student jobs and feeling like none of his friends really get him because of the way he thinks about romance. He thinks things couldn’t get any worse when he starts having weird dreams about a floating, green haired girl and starts seeing other weird things in town. Except, as it turns out, the mysterious girl is real and she claims to be an exorcist. What’s more, she offers Darien a scholarship at her university. In this new, confusing world Darien is not only offered a chance to start over but to finally find people like him and a place to belong.
