In October 2016, a teenage girl was found brutally murdered along a jogging trail in St. Joseph, Missouri. She was naked, stabbed repeatedly, and her throat was slashed. As investigators dug into the case, they uncovered a disturbing web of delusion, detachment, and darkness. What began as a baffling mystery ultimately led to a chilling discovery. This murder had been carried out as part of a planned satanic ritual. Get instant access to all episodes, including premium unreleased episodes, commercial-free at swordandscale.com

    5

Energy Healing Part 1: Consciousness at Work in the Body

In Part 1 of this two part exploration, we turn from the mind to the body and begin with a mystery that modern science has struggled to explain. Energy healing is one of the oldest medical traditions on Earth, yet it has long existed at the margins of Western understanding. The episode opens with a Cambridge-trained material scientist, Simon Duan, whose worldview shifts instantly when a Qigong practitioner in China removes his wisdom teeth pain-free - without anesthesia. His story leads us into the origins of ancient Chinese medicine, where psychic doctors once perceived organs with their mind’s eye and communicated with plants to understand their medicinal properties. From there, we meet healer Julie Goeltz, whose husband’s life-threatening lymphedema disappeared during a Reiki session, launching her into a practice that now includes remote healing and vivid remote viewing experiences that transcend physical distance. We also hear from author and clinician Jill Blakeway, who describes energy healing as the body’s own intelligence becoming coherent and who has spent years tracing the science behind these subtle forces. The investigation widens further through the work of physician-scientist Dr. Neil Theise, whose research helped identify the interstitium, a fluid-filled network running through the body that behaves electrically and may be the physical basis for meridians, chakras, and the subtle systems described by healers for thousands of years. This discovery raises a provocative possibility that the interstitium may carry not only fluid but information. If so, the boundary between mind and body becomes more permeable than we imagine. Part 1 sets the foundation for next week’s episode, where we follow healers and scientists into the lab as they attempt to capture what might be moving between people during healing itself. For this episode we would like to thank: Phenomena, a three-part documentary and six part podcast featuring exclusive access to groundbreaking scientists, transformative healers, and evidence that’s rewriting what we know about energy healing and the human body  https://www.phenomenahealing.com/telepathytapes The Emerald Gate Charitable Trust, a philanthropic foundation committed to improving the human condition and expanding the conscious mind through rigorous scientific research, whose research has been cited in this podcast https://emeraldgatefoundation.org/research-projects/ The Subtle Energy Funders Collective, a network of philanthropists in support of bringing energy healing to the mainstream through a systems change approach  www.subtleenergyfunderscollective.com -- Thank you to our Sponsors! The Loop Ep. 5: Yes, And ...

Kaysha is in her early 20s: low on resources, but big on dreams. Sometimes, those dreams feel tantalizingly close to reality; other times, she's pulled back into a life she badly wants to leave behind. We follow Kaysha for a year and a half as she tries to break out of the loop.  This is the fifth episode of “The Loop,” Ear Hustle’s six-part series about kids in New York City who are caught up, one way or another, in the criminal justice system.  Ear Hustle would like to thank: Joanne Smith-Darden, Associate Professor, School of Social Work, Ruth T. Koehler Endowed Professor in Children's Services, Michigan State University and Co-Director, SPARK Lab; Heather McCauley, Associate Professor, School of Social Work, Michigan State University and Co-Director, SPARK Lab; and Adam Brown, Associate Professor, Silberman School of Social Work at Hunter College, City University of New York, for their tremendous support of this project.  Big thanks, too, to the Drama Club team — including Josie Whittlesey, Cesar Rosado, Tiffany “Tiny” Cruz, Abby Pierce, Sophie Jones, and Ashley Adams. You can find out more about their work here. And thanks to Nancy Ginsberg, Aylese Kanze, and Commissioner Danhauser at New York City’s Administration for Children’s Services for saying “yes” to this project. As always, thanks to Warden Andes and Lt. Berry at San Quentin Rehabilitation Center; Acting Warden Parker, Associate Warden Lewis, and Lt. Newborg at the California Institution for Women; and Warden De La Cruz and Lt. Williams at the Central California Women’s Facility for their support of our work. “Videomate: Men” (Encore)

Videomate: Men was a VHS tape released in 1987 featuring 60 single men pitching themselves as dates to women on the other side of the TV screen: “The love of your life could be on your TV tonight!” the box reads. In retrospect, Videomate: Men is a bizarre and hilarious time capsule, but at the time it was one of many manifestations of what was known as video dating. To find out how anyone thought this was a good idea, Decoder Ring examines the weird and forgotten world of video dating in the 1970s, ’80s, and ’90s to find out why video dating once seemed like the future—and if that future is still yet to come. On this episode, originally released in 2019, we talk to the creators of the Found Footage Fest, VHS collectors who unleashed Videomate on the internet; ask the creators of video dating services like Videomate’s Steve Dworman and Great Expectations’ Jeffrey Ullman what they were thinking; and talk to participants who used these services but not necessarily in the way that was intended. We’ll also discuss the future of video dating with Coffee Meets Bagel co-founder Dawoon Kang and former host of The Longest Shortest Time Andrea Silenzi. This episode was written by Willa Paskin and was produced and edited by Benjamin Frisch. We had research assistance from Cleo Levin. Decoder Ring is produced by Katie Shepherd, Max Freedman, and Evan Chung, our supervising producer. Merritt Jacob is Senior Technical Director. If you have any cultural mysteries you want us to decode, email us at [email protected], or leave a message on the Decoder Ring hotline at 347-460-7281. First Amendment Auditors

In this week’s Flightless Bird, David and Rob meet Betsy, a librarian who one day found herself being harassed by a “First Amendment Auditor” - a man in a hoodie badgering her endlessly for her name, salary and employment details. After calling the police, she discovered they could do nothing - and Betsy’s footage was uploaded for 100,000 people calling for her dismissal, and arrest. Farrier interviews Kristina Wilson and Kristi Nickodem, both experts in Public Law and Government, to find out what the hell was going on - and to see what someone like Betsy can do when confronted by this very unusual subculture of insufferable YouTubers.Email us: [email protected] Patreon: patreon.com/flightlessbird Dealing with Harassment and Threats Towards Local Government Officials and Employees: https://canons.sog.unc.edu/2022/07/dealing-with-harassment-and-threats-towards-local-government-officials-and-employees/ Responding to First Amendment Auditors: https://www.sog.unc.edu/sites/default/files/reports/2022-11-09%2020220124%20LGLB%20141.pdf Coates’ Canons NC Local Government Law: https://canons.sog.unc.edu/?s=%22responding+to+first+amendment+audits%22 Learn more about your ad choices.
