Almost a year after the federal election, Mark Carney’s Liberals have secured a majority government.
Carney technically clinched that majority with three byelection wins last night.
That said, two of those seats were always going to go Liberal. The third seat had been Liberal until the Supreme Court cancelled the incredibly tight result 10 months into this government’s tenure.
Carney didn’t have a majority when all three seats were Liberal before.
So really, Carney secured this majority through floor crossings. He’s managed to coax five opposition MPs into the Liberal fold: four Conservatives, and one NDP MP.
Personally, I’m not thrilled about this tactic, nor the fact that it resulted in a majority government. That might make some of you mad. It certainly pissed off folks on Threads (I’m still bruised!).
But I’m hoping you’ll hear me out. Because in my view, majorities aren’t good for democracy — and I’ll tell you why.
There are also some interesting insights to glean about the Conservatives and NDP in the wake of last night’s Liberal sweep.
In today’s video, we’ll talk about it all.
