about

About decomposition

Decomposers are the hidden agents of renewal. Beneath the undergrowth, they break down organic matter – wood, leaves, and the bodies of other organisms – into the fertile substrate that sustains new life. Larvae, beetles, ants, fungi, and snails form a vast, interdependent network where destruction and creation become inseparable.
Their work is continuous yet almost inaudible, an acoustic microcosm of transformation. In Detritum, these organisms are not subjects of documentation but collaborators whose actions generate the project’s sonic core. The recordings capture the rhythms of consumption and conversion – the minute textures of decay that echo, in human hands, as acts of musical decomposition.

Nature devours itself; matter remains alive by migrating from one stomach to another. At the banquet of life, everyone is sometimes a guest and sometimes food [...]

- Jean Henri Fabre

About Detritum

Starting in the fall of 2025, Detritum was conceived as a community production: Each artist received a specific recording from a place of decay made in a former peatland in Lower Saxony. In a collaborative decomposition, these recordings served as a starting point for individual exploration and communal exercise.

Detritum is a study of transformation – of how sound, like matter, can be broken down and reformed. What begins as the microscopic activity of decomposers beneath the undergrowth becomes the seed of a larger, collective process: sounds passed between artists, eroded, absorbed, and reconstituted into new configurations. The project treats listening itself as a kind of ecological practice – an attention to the fragile, residual, and transient.
