Cloud cost optimization is a marathon, not a sprint. Here's the #1 mistake when getting it wrong: The experts at Pagaya recently shared with us the most common errors companies make that lead to cloud waste. And the number one mistake they observed? Rushing through projects. “Developers need a lot of resources to make it work,” they explained. “Plus, if they don’t have time before they have to present something, it’s logical they will ask for 20 CPUs and 60 GB of RAM just so the project starts running.” This can even create an internal conflict between developers and DevOps, as the latter struggles to control resource usage. “It’s like a competition,” they explain. So, how do you balance it? "The answer is simple: Add a cloud architect to the mix. This ensures that someone can make the final call and manage the thousand different incentives cloud optimization projects create." When Rafael Brito opened the first Kubernetes cluster to hundreds of users in 2016 as the platform engineering manager of a large bank, he borrowed the phrase “benign neglect.” That supposedly benign neglect was about managing Kubernetes resource primitives. His launch plan quickly backfired, with users complaining that they could not schedule pods due to a lack of resources, and the internal virtualization team confused about how the entire cluster had only 15% CPU utilization on the virtualization layer, yet hundreds of users were unable to access the available resources. Rafa shares his personal story navigating the Kubernetes Resource Management Journey with The New Stack. Back in 2016, he was one of the first to experience something that we now see Kubernetes teams struggle with every day.
