The German armed forces stylize the iron cross pretty differently nowadays, precisely to break from the connection to the nazis. Even though Hitler himself favored antiqua over fraktur typefaces, it wasn't until 1941 when they made the switch, so the latter is more often associated with the third reich than the former. The unit number, 422 (which was changed from 129, the one assigned when it was established), does sound like a neo-nazi dog whistle, 4 22 = 88 or something.
