about

alien is informed by themes of estrangement, solitude, and the vastness of outer space. This album is quieter and more stripped down than some of my previous work. Its cyclical organization reflects the way things sometimes orbit each other: celestial objects, people, thoughts, feelings.

As usual, these are all single-take solo improvisations that I've recorded on cheap gear and processed in both Ableton Live and an ancient version of PEAK. I recorded all tracks on soprano saxophone. Tracks 1, 4, 6, and 10 were initially created by playing multiphonics on a traditional setup, and the remaining tracks were created by combining various physical techniques (vocal and non) with no mouthpiece. My music isn't programmatic, but it is personal. Some general associations I have with the tracks are as follows:

Tracks 1, 4, 6, and 10 (outer space): Grisey's category of static music, or music without time; infinity; the night sky as something to always return to; calm, quiet, dark

Tracks 2 and 9 (inner space): Xenakis's stochastic forms; insects eating their way from the inside out; violence out of silence

Tracks 3, 5, 7, and 8 (the space between): ghost love songs; all the things we wish we could say/could have said; music for/from the dead and dying

When I improvise, I'm trying my best to express what is inside of me at the time, in the hopes that it might also sound like some of what's inside of you, and that you feel less alone in the world after listening.

This one is for all the heartbroken weirdos out there who feel better at night, in the dark and the quiet, looking at the sky and everything beyond.

Love and Respect,
R
