RPGReact
A downloadable framework for Windows and macOS
Developer note: I’m releasing RPGReact in early access to get real feedback from developers using it in active projects. The core architecture is complete and already powering real UI systems, but as it’s used across more projects and plugin combinations, there may be edge cases or rough spots that need refinement. Feedback from early adopters will directly influence stability improvements, compatibility work, and future features.
RPGReact — Modern React UI, Natively Integrated with RPG Maker MZ
RPGReact lets you build fully custom game interfaces using React, while continuing to use RPG Maker MZ for all gameplay logic, content creation, and tooling.
This is not a UI skin or wrapper. RPGReact integrates directly into the MZ runtime, allowing React to operate as a first-class UI layer that stays synchronized with the engine as your game runs.
Designed to Work With RPG Maker — Not Around It
RPGReact preserves the RPG Maker workflow instead of replacing it.
You continue to:
- Build maps using the map editor
- Author gameplay with events, switches, and variables
- Rely on the engine’s battle system and runtime data
- Use familiar tools and pipelines
The engine remains the authoritative source of game state.
React is responsible for rendering, layout, interaction, and presentation.
This clear separation keeps projects structured, predictable, and maintainable.
A First-Class UI Layer, Not a Sidecar App
RPGReact runs inside the RPG Maker MZ game window, not alongside it.
Your UI:
- Updates instantly as game state changes
- Reflects live runtime data, not duplicated models
- Feels native to the game rather than overlaid or external
From a player’s perspective, there is no “React UI” — only a modern interface that behaves like part of the engine.
Build the UI You Actually Want
RPGReact removes the constraints of default windows and fixed layouts.
You can:
- Create custom HUDs, menus, and overlays
- Build complex layouts with predictable behavior
- Animate transitions cleanly
- Share UI patterns across screens and systems
- Use modern tooling and workflows you already know
UI complexity becomes a design choice, not a technical fight.
Feature Comparison
| Capability | Default RPG Maker MZ UI | RPGReact |
|---|---|---|
| UI Technology | Engine-defined windows | React (JSX + component model) |
| Layout Flexibility | Fixed window layouts | Fully custom layouts |
| State Synchronization | Manual refresh logic | Automatic reactive updates |
| Complex UI Composition | Difficult / limited | Native component composition |
| Animations & Transitions | Manual scripting | Declarative & reusable |
| Code Reuse Across Screens | Minimal | Shared components & patterns |
| Modern Tooling | Engine-only | React ecosystem & workflows |
| Integration with Game Logic | Native | Native (engine remains authoritative) |
| Plugin UI Compatibility | High | Depends on UI assumptions |
Integration Scope & Compatibility
RPGReact integrates directly with the RPG Maker MZ runtime and replaces the default UI layer.
As a result:
- Core engine workflows continue to function as expected
- Gameplay logic remains driven by RPG Maker systems
- Plugins that modify default UI behavior may require adaptation
Collaboration & Plugin Support
RPGReact is actively developed and designed to be extended.
If you:
- Depend on a specific plugin
- Are building your own plugins
- Want tighter integration between systems
Compatibility can often be addressed through targeted integration points. Collaboration with other developers is welcome, and support can expand where it makes sense.
