The past two years, having lost the two most important people in my life, I've spent a lot of time meditating on how they interacted with their life purpose (or their bliss, as Joseph Campbell would say) and how that influenced how they lived....And then, meditating on my own bliss and how I'm upholding it. As life happens, things have seemed unbearable, and really difficult, I've felt really disconnected from my self...like a soul trapped in a weird body and unfamiliar timespace but, when I've cried all the tears and expelled all the emotion, it becomes quiet every once in a while and I can see myself again....and I'm still guided by the same purpose as the 16-year Sam sitting on the floor of a shag carpeted bedroom with a black laminate guitar and an old Portastudio...so this song is about how I connected with my purpose, the bliss of making songs, in Pottawatomie County (Pott County to the locals) some 24 years ago, and how I am, thankfully, still tethered to it today....
And I wanted my friends Klara and Johanna of First Aid Kit to sing it with me because they were such a huge part of my becoming, as we toured together many times in the early years of our careers, and it's been such a pleasure to see all the ways they've continued to let their bliss guide them, marching to their own beat, following their hearts...they are true artists and true souls
lyrics
On the growing edge of what I know
is a deep ball pit of snow
but over where the sun comes out
is the song that keeps me waking up
somehow keeps me waking up
Singer in a crowded room
i'm always gonna sing for you
i wouldn't know what else to do
singer in a crowded room
repeating dreams in a four wall world
Pott County call return
an orphan now, the winter burns
I sweat through the only cure
Pott County call return
Singer in a crowded room
I'm always gonna sing for you
i wouldn't know what else to do
singer in a crowded room
Toil forever in love
Toil forever and ever, enough
Singer in a crowded room
I'm always gonna sing for you
I'm always gonna sing for you
I'm always gonna sing for you
Singer in a crowded room
I'm always gonna sing for you
I wouldn't know what else to do
Singer in a crowded room
Singer in a crowded room
