about

SOLAH steps back onto the scene with her second studio album Forever, pencilled in for 4th June. Primarily recognised for her soulful melodies, unmistakable voice and down-to-earth artist persona, Forever holds steady onto these qualities, yet finds freedom in straying from expectations.

Atmospheric and all-encompassing, the album’s list of collaborators spans beyond the UK to the Netherlands, Tokyo, São Paulo and beyond - a reminder of drum & bass’ global collective identity, and testament to the musical connections and friends in the industry that she has made over the years, since her first album King.

Keeping it bold and uplifting in the first half of the tracklist across songs like ‘Lovesick,’ ‘Summer Summer’ and ‘I’ll Be There’ - think soul and sentiment, confetti cannons and a carnival-esque spirit. SOLAH intentionally set out to create a body of work that would translate with positivity on stage - embracing big vocals, strong melodies and hooks. A carefree and colourful escape from the real world!

Spending several years of her early life in a seven-piece band, SOLAH has always had an affinity for horn sections - heavily resonating with the added percussion and energy that they bring to a record.
Her second studio album is a return to her roots, and a dedication to remaining as instrumental as possible within an oftentimes systemised genre - ‘I’ll Be There’ with Trail, one of the first tunes that shaped the album’s sound.

Across 14 tracks (her largest body of work to date) and several years in the making, Forever explores themes of unrequited devotion, companionship and joy - with a plethora of feel-good, uplifting moments contrasted in the second half by more brooding, introspective through-lines.

A collaboration between SOLAH, Makoto, Hugh Hardie and Azotix, ‘Lovesick’ (2 April) is a much-needed reminder that drum & bass isn’t always just about rowdy basslines - soulfulness will forever be at its core. Serving as a follow-up to the contrasting ‘Want U Bad’ on the imprint in November - her celestial vocals set against a hard-hitting backdrop will simply deliver every time.

Signing to Hospital in 2022 as the imprint’s first female vocalist with the release of her debut album King (dedicated to SOLAH’s son), the new album’s title track and release focus ‘Forever’ with Break is dedicated to her fiancé and partner of 14 years, completing the circle of devotion for her. Previously collaborating on ‘Raise Your Hands’ last year, Break has been a transformative musical ally and permanent inspiration for SOLAH, marking another full-circle moment for the Brighton-based superstar.

“If I only ever do two albums in my life, dedicating them to the people that mean the most to me felt like a really nice way to mark the achievement, and make it mean something to them as well - especially as these vinyls are on our wall!.” -SOLAH

A love song at its heart, the title track ‘Forever’ makes use of big-band elements like horns and brass stabs - allowing the track to feel like a celebration of the soulful side of the genre. The album also features her first release in drum & bass with her other half on ‘If You Care,’ allowing them to celebrate their musical journey together.

Although jazz-tinged drum & bass has consistently been SOLAH’s MO, she has always been drawn to emotionally-charged and contemplative undercurrents, crafting lyrics and building worlds that resonate with listeners underneath the surface - and with that, the second half of the album was born.

Arriving at ‘False Reality’ with São Paulo-based Alibi, the record takes an unforeseen but well-received turn. As most musicians are hardly one-dimensional, SOLAH found herself still reflective of and infatuated with the weightier, more illusive side of the music industry - the side that often exists deeper underground.

The second pre-release single ‘Wings’ in collaboration with labelmate Hoax (7 May) is seemingly the album’s wild card, and an excellent demonstration of tension and release. With extreme contrast between the track’s sections, the juxtaposition plays into the wider themes of light and dark that SOLAH explores on the album.

Shortlisted in the Drum&BassArena Awards on numerous occasions and known for working closely with some of the genre’s most respected players, even the voice behind the Top 10 UK Chart hit 'Get Out My Head' by Shane Codd in 2020, SOLAH has remained on an upwards trajectory throughout her career - but never preferring the spotlight.

On Forever, she remains tethered to the heartfelt essence of the SOLAH project, whilst flipping the narrative on its head - stressing that there are always two sides of the coin. SOLAH contains multitudes, and Forever is a celebration of numerous worlds existing in harmony.

Whether already attuned to SOLAH’s discography or discovering her artistry for the very first time, her latest offering is both a welcome venture into the dark and unfamiliar, and a deepening of what she already does so well - a significant statement of purpose from one of Hospital’s most sensational voices.
