  • Queen Mary I, daughter of Henry VIII, was nicknamed Bloody Mary because she killed lots of Protestants.

    Her father had broken England’s ties with the Roman Catholic Church because the pope refused to annul the first of his six marriages. When she became queen, she wanted to restore England’s relationship with the Roman Catholic Church, and so married the Spanish catholic king, Phillip II. This led to a rebellion breaking out with a group of Protestants, so she had them all mutilated and burned at the stake.
