Unified Payments Interface (UPI) is a real-time payment system developed by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) that facilitates seamless and instant transfer of funds between bank accounts through a mobile platform. Launched in 2016, UPI revolutionized digital transactions in India by enabling users to send and receive money, pay bills, and make purchases directly from their smartphones without the need for traditional banking methods or card details. It uses a Virtual Payment Address (VPA) to simplify transactions, eliminating the need to share sensitive bank details. Highly secure and interoperable, UPI integrates multiple banks under one interface and supports features like QR code payments, scheduled transfers, and peer-to-peer payment requests. Its wide adoption has significantly contributed to India’s shift towards a cashless economy.
