Good take on counter-strike/hero shooter with an actually pretty unique and refreshing mechanic. The high(ish) ttk feels really good compared to similar games.

Shooting through Yvettes teddy bear in the 3v3 mode and just racking up cringe kills is 10/10, please don't nerf.

Incredibly refreshing game. The ai is fun to play with and is complex enough it takes awhile to learn its patterns. Co-op, just battling ai and chickens, is really where it's at. I'm used to RTS with strict factions like C&C so the factory system felt weird at first but I super fell in love with it.

It's nice to see what on first glance looks like a fans passion project, turning out to be an incredibly fleshed out, fun, and interesting game.

I don't want to be the guy that's just complaining, but I've been burnt bad by some games lately and this game really brings the joy I wanna feel in new games.

I'm poor af rn but soon, I'll at least be giving that silver donation. I've spent more on games that ain't even half as good.

Quite possibly the best tower defense made, very good both on mobile and Steam. I love the twisting of game mechanics in the bonus levels and the map editor is really cool. this how you make a ftp phone game lmao

Early Access Review
Edit 11/24: It shouldn't be legal for this game to still be on sale with $80 of DLC.

This game has been super rushed out, under baked, with bare bones game modes and leadership that doesn't seem to be in this game for the long run.

I've put about 150 hours into this game playing nearly every play test since testing started in early December, was on a winning tournament team, and I've played a few of the older tribes games but not religiously so I've been adjacent to this community for awhile.

I've been excited for a new Tribes game for a few years now feeling the nostalgia of playing Ascend ten years ago. So I'm very excited for a new Tribes and honestly want to see this game become something. These play tests have felt very good and introduced a new game mode called Honorball that was very, very good and has the potential to bring a lot of new players to the game. I haven't even cared much for the fact that allot of things from previous games weren't making a return. The new guy in charge of developing this game has basically said that they have absolutely no intention of bringing back old, expected features, like 32v32 and vehicles.

But issues keep coming up and it's getting very hard to defend this game even if I desire to do so. First that big game mode that everyone is exited about? It's disappeared. Rumor had it that it would be becoming an entirely separate game, but the community, really did not want that. So where did it go? It wasn't a particularity buggy game mode or super unbalanced. It actually felt really good. Are we going to have to spend another $20 to play Honorball as a separate game?

There is also a deathmatch game mode, but it is hidden away in custom lobbies, no quick play, and there was a mercenary/kill confirmed kind of gamemode that was tested but didn't make it to early access.

So, the game has released with only one game mode, CTF, and personally it's what I want to play the most, but I know that this game mode has a high skill cap and often new players really don't like it.

Next, the last couple of play tests have absolutely been infested with bots to fill out match sizes. This games biggest game mode is 16v16 and they are struggling to fill those. I haven't played since release but it sounds like that is still a problem and I'll soon go check it out for myself.

The last play test they quietly introduced AI art for kill cam banners and player Icons. #1 I don't understand why modern games want to make their own Icons and stuff when they can just let players use their steam/xbox/whatever Icons. This is already just silly to not let people bring their own player icons. #2 I simply can't in good faith support stuff with AI art in it. And #3 the devs initially claimed that this art would be a placeholder and was traced over (which is not what it looks like). Quickly the head of the company went to discord to joke on people complaining about the AI generated art and the devs refused to elaborate if this art was actually temporary or if it would be removed for the early access release. It was not. On their road map they claim they'll be doing another art update during March. So hopefully in a month it'll be gone. As a side note, the winning teams of the draft tournament got AI generated looking trophies for player Icons. Thanks I guess.

Finally is the very cool decision to open this early access game with $80 of micro transactions that puts a paywall behind basic skins for the two main factions in Tribes (Diamond Swords and Blood Eagles). The best analogue that I can think up for this is if a new Halo was released, and you could only play as a UNSC Marine if you bought the base game. If you wanted to play as a Spartan, that is a $40 DLC. And if you wanted to play as an elite, that is a SEPARATE $40 DLC. I've seen a lot of people trying to defend this decision on Discord and I seriously cannot understand how people can't see this as any thing other than a cash grab on the border of becoming a straight up scam...

I really do hope this game can become a successful part of the tribes franchise with a healthy modern competitive scene, but from what I've seen from the leadership and monetization of this game, it's dangerously close to just being a paycheck for some company. I've been religiously recommending this game to my friends who I know have been into games like titanfall, and stuff like valorant and overwatch's competitive scenes. And I have had pretty positive responses. But these last play tests, and this early access release, have me worried that I'm humiliating myself by promoting this game.

Oh also I forgot about the orbital strike thing. Why was that even conceived and put into the game? It just punishes people for capping certain kinds of routes. Like on Katabatic, you can hit a fast right to left or back to front route were you can just dunk the flag from the opposing flag stand. Why would you want to just straight up be punished for being able to pull that off? Seems like good, positive game design. It has no real benefits to chasers and even as a chaser seeing a carrier get hit with it is just real silly and meaningless.

P.S. Just an update that maybe a little petty, but I would like to point out that the executive head of this game, Erez, left the discord server for Tribes 3 on it's launch day after being fairly active in that community throughout most of play testing. kinda sus, but also he was not doing a good job at promoting or providing players with confidence in his game.

Edit: Prophecy has opened up testing for a new game.

The empty and vague road map the devs released for Tribes 3 claimed there would be a new map in April. It's May, with no communication about said map. No other solid items are on that road map. Considering how low player counts are and considering this companies owners history with abandoning games and disdain towards Tribes fans, I say it'll be safe to assume Tribes 3 wont be getting another major update. Erez has found a new product full of asset flips (and certainly ai generated trash) to initially make some launch money with and abandon to slowly rot with time. Almost all Hi-Rez products had similar fates, and Prophecy will continue the tradition.

There's a dedicated competitive community that I'm kinda apart of. I'm glad it exists.

Monitization is becoming more blatant and unapologetic. Repair costs are insanely high meaning even with premium you'll still rarely have credits for anything else

The game-play of Halo Infinite is really good, but the monetization issues are a blatant money grab that contradicts previous statements from 343 about what this game would look like.

I think allot of the reason why this game has been getting such good reviews is because the other AAA full priced shooters that have come out recently have fallen flat on their faces. If you want a good brand new FPS right now Halo is pretty much your only choice.

Again the game-play is good and I've seen allot of reviews saying it is 'innovative'. I don't think any real innovation has been done to this game with one exception of copying and pasting the grappling hook from Titanfall. The game-play is very similar to Halo 5 (which isn't a bad thing to me, I really liked Halo 5's multiplayer), the Armour abilities are nothing new in the halo series, and besides a few additions, the weapons are pretty much all the same as in past games.

The new battle pass monetization is very lousy and predatory. FTP players have nearly no armor cosmetics and mostly get tokens to cycle through the incredibly tedious daily missions that prompt players to only join matches to complete missions and leave. These missions are the only real way to build up XP for the battle pass 343 added. You can get battle pass XP for completing rounds but what you gain from those matches diminishes rather quickly till you can't earn XP that way anymore. This means that in order to earn new cosmetics you HAVE to pay for the battle pass and you HAVE to go out of your way to play these mission. Just regular game-play casually with your friends or competitively in more intimate game modes will not help you progress down the battle pass.

Plus to start off 343's battle pass they are focusing on Halo Reach cosmetics. Halo reach's armours have always been very popular with fans but are locked behind a pay wall that you have to complete allot of bad missions to get. This is predatory as it begs people to buy this battle pass thinking they are going to play a holy crap ton of this game just to get a cosmetic.

When it comes to cosmetics, the battle pass and limited time events are the only ways to get them. Now armor colours are being monetized and you can no longer set your own primary and secondary colour. Instead you have to hunt for a specific armour shader you would like. The battle pass seems to be entirely cosmetic which is nice, but it is full of useless daily mission tokens and fluffy addons like headsets and mouthpieces for your armour (like in Halo Reach). And if you were worried they would start adding goofy and flashy skins when they went FTP, worry no more as they added an insanely tacky samurai armor and i'm sure more stuff like that is on the way.

There has also been allot of backlash about how thin this game really is. It lacks allot of game mode playlists and doesn't have very many maps. Some employees at 343 have taken to social media to rant about how hard it was to develop this game thus far but I think all they're doing is hurting themselves by riling up angry fan boys (like me i guess). One of the arguments I've been hearing is that 343 spent 6 years working hard on this game and the current criticism of their work is excessive. There was 3 years between Halo 4s and Halo 5s launches. Both of those games were full sized games with forge, campaign, and multiplayer when they launched. It has been double that time between Halo 5 and Halo Infinite (which is launching stripped down into pieces). I understand that it can be a near sighted argument to say "wow 343 had so much time to make this game and its coming out like this?" But I think it's safe to say that many Halo fans were expecting Halo 5s successor to be a fully fleshed out game just like the previous ones. The backlash from Halo Infinite launch being torn into parts and made FTP should be expected.

Finally I think the game play is very good and the move to launch it FTP unexpectedly early is very smart. I am still gunnu be playing this game for awhile but I strongly wish 343 would have waited another year and launched Halo Infinite as a fully fleshed out full price game with the multiplayer, campaign, and forge all available day one. I wish the battle pass would never have been added and instead cosmetics were unlocked through multiplayer and campaign achievements as they used to be. But I guess this is wishful thinking considering where games are today.

Do I think you should play this game? Yes its game play is what you'd want out of a new Halo. Just don't spend a single dime on it.

10/10 Hard to start up as controls and systems are complex, but customization and engine building are really neat. I think they keyboard building controls are actually pretty good.

Running game seems broke and useless unless you literally only got like 1 yards to go in the red zone. Blocking is so bad and I found playing defense unfun. The story mode is cheese af but wants you to take it seriously. The new yard mode is neat and has some good mulitiplayer potential, but the fact that that's the only new or interesting thing makes $60 for this game absolutely unreasonable.
